You don't need college to learn the humanities. A library is free and most schools post class curricula online.
I went to a very expensive private liberal arts school and they preached endlessly about the institution's power to create good citizens, engage in debate etc but to be honest the classes themselves were lackluster. It was the conversations after class on the lawn or over coffee or outside the library that really mattered and are the insights I remember after all these years.
This is a pretty bungled article and she has the causality of the aesthetics wrong - her videos don't resemble post-internet artists, post-internet art resembles them in their attempts to reify authenticity and pre-broadband earnestness. Instead of using Petra Cortright as lens to read Aghdam, the author should've examined "amateur" sites like Geo/neocities, angelfire etc or the style of Iranian music videos.
I've been working professionally as an engineer for almost 5 years, the past two in dedicated DevOps / SRE capacities. At my current firm, which is a large global company, I make 150k/yr + variable bonus (usually ~%20).
This is in NYC. I kind of hate the work, though. Would much prefer to go back to a pure programming role as I miss the problem solving and analytical aspect of coding. SRE is a lot of plumbing and then twiddling config files or sitting on the line with cloud support. But it is cool to bring up huge clusters at the click of a button.
