These things won't stop being silly and start being useful until most of the speculative gain aspects are over. Since I don't think any of the speculation will really die down, I also don't think they will ever enter their use-value state.
It could be fringe, currency speculation is normal worldwide, but the primary purpose of currency is value transfer between parties. Until thats the primary purpose, its not money, its gambling.
