you know, after thinking about this, it doesn't surprise me. think about the suicide nets outside of some of the factories in china, if they are okay with exploiting (albeit indirectly arguably) PEOPLE in third world countries than what makes a person so sure in a first world country that they won't do the same to them in their own way?
Mr. Cook needs to do some of that himself.
Translation:
"Oh crap, they actually bother to think about what the implementation details are. Better try to pull everyone into a false sense of security before maximizing the exploitation again."
Marketing can only weakly rebuild trust; at some point trust has to be earned by difficult acts, like popularizing end-to-end encrypted messaging or not unlocking that San Bernardino iPhone.
So far it sounds like Apple continues to talk one way and walk another on user privacy.

From the referenced Financial Review interview[1]:
> Cook sees the upholding of privacy against those “hucksters” and their “juiced-up algorithms” as a human right. And taking a stand has certainly been a trait of his tenure. “We do things because they’re just and right,” he said when asked by investors at a shareholder meeting in 2014 whether Apple should avoid embracing environmental causes. “If you want me to make decisions that have a clear ROI, then you should get out of the stock.“
Seems a trifle hard to square with Apple's recent actions.

Hey Tim? Your opportunity for saying things like this has ended permanently. You have trashed Apple's reputation for privacy and your own. Good job.
