why would i use this instead of aws-vault?

(yes, i acknowledge that may be a very ignorant question)

Main 2 points here would be simplicity of use (interactive interfaces) and not needing to use any specific shell signatures for granting access to AWS to processes on your system. It's just an alternative ;).
