Twillio the only way to send transactional SMS?

Check out OneSignal (https://onesignal.com/)! We offer SMS both as a standalone service as well as part of our omni-channel offering.
We offer both a seamless experience for both developers and marketers with a clean, robust API and a fully featured dashboard.
Indeed we have templates for SMS that your team can share and edit without you getting involved. We have quite a lot more than that as well, e.g. see our Journeys product.
Feel free to reach out to me directly for questions or feedback!

I have researched (but never used in production) SNS https://aws.amazon.com/sns/.
Watching this post though, because I'd like to see if there is a defacto standard people like.

I've never used Sendgrid but with Courier you send 10,000 free messages per month so you can try before you buy.
"Launch new channels in minutes Courier supports email, SMS, push, in-app, and multiple chat channels in a single API. Start supporting a new channel with the click of a button—no need to write more code."

Aren't you still paying for twilio as well tho?
Super easy to use, highly recommended: https://46elks.com/
Plivo is another alternative.
Google Voice
Subject to low volume, "personal use" restrictions common to the wireless carriers.
It's not intended for bulk messaging, which can result in messages being reported as spam and blocked.

In the old days (2006 ) we used to connect a Nokia phone in the data center with a USB cable
This works --- for a while, until you starting sending more than a few hundred SMS per day.
Your wireless service contract specifies "personal use" --- not data center operations. This is a vague definition at the discretion of the service provider but at some point, they will cut you off.

Also somewhere must still have a folder of scripts to bulk register ICQ accounts and send free SMS
i'm fed up of people in marketing/product asking to update sms templates every now and then.
is there a tool like sendgrid but for SMS?
thanks
