I do wish the screen was more than 500 nits, but perhaps future versions will improve on this.

You can get an SOC with the rated specs for < $300 on AliExpress, so add screen, battery, case & assembly I would guess at least $599.

Yes, FydeOS is a ChromiumOS fork with their own login server and Android support. They recently open-sourced their base build (including Pi image overlay) on OpenFyde.io
