They left all data on an unsecured system on the internet, the description sounds like the classic elastic search instance found by shodan case. Everything is spun as „bad bad hacker“ when in reality it was blatant incompetence and negligence. The real culprits get away, no charges are being filed. The government entity that is responsible for putting the data on the internet is calling this „common practice „.

I didn't quite follow this.. are they saying the data was just scraped from public sources?

I guess we just have to admit that personal data and life is no longer personal. I don't really see a big problem there. We get more and more used to it. And when the iot stuff gets really integrated in everything, it's going to be a lot more harder to keep at least something in secret.
