The future of VR is web based
The future of VR might be online instead of native. With multiple VR headsets having their own systems, each being hard to develop on and incompatible with each other, and headsets like Meta Quest only selectively allowing apps into their store, WebXR websites are still accessible by all. I have played incredible free games online and this space is only just developing. A-frame and react-three-fiber make it very easy to make them too. Ps, I'm building something cool in this space and looking for a cofounder to join me. Here is my linkedin profile:

While we will eventually have an open standards protocol, it will likely be the market that decides. Having worked with the W3C's Web3D working group, I see it the same as how web browser features are often added/sponsored by one browser company and later adopted by all.
Much more interested in AR, though. If you haven't heard of Steve Mann, he's been a huge inspiration:

I like the concept too in theory, but I haven’t seen it work in practice yet and I don’t know how supportive of it the large tech companies (Meta, Apple, etc) will be since it could hurt the financial gains they get from app stores. I don’t mean they’ll stop it. I just believe they might never support it as much as the app store, which could end up making the app store experiences better over time.
It would be awesome though and I’m curious: what are some great WebXR experiences you’ve tried? I’d love to check some out and explore building in the space.

there is no VR in the future IMHO :)
AR will be the next big consumer space, the new generation is growing up using vr headsets even if they seem dystopian to you. The meta quest 2 sold more than ps5 last christmas
Exactly
