My favorite thing about flying saucers is that they tend to look like the latest kitchen appliance. It's funny how aliens seem to have the same fascination with the Maytag catalog.
> “I’ve had people threaten my wife and daughter, and try to break into our online accounts – far more than I ever had as the deputy director of intelligence [of US Strategic Command],” Kirkpatrick says. “I didn’t have China and Russia trying to get on me as much as these people are.”
Wow, quite a community.

Great article, but the final paragraph is implausible: 'And what if the government does eventually get its hands on aliens and their flying saucers? “It’s not their job [to keep it secret],” he says. “It would immediately get turned over to Nasa, and Nasa would immediately disclose it to everybody. That’s THEIR job.”'
I'm far more certain it would be ultra-top-secret, with multiple layers of "need-to-know" and elaborate diversions, and with the emergence of multiple figures jostling for power who would compartmentalize the whole operation: divide and rule.
The X-Files nailed it, as did Dark Skies.

I am not so sure.
> In 1996, a group of scientists found features in the likeness of microscopic fossils of bacteria in the meteorite, suggesting that these organisms also originated on Mars. The claims immediately made headlines worldwide, culminating in U.S. president Bill Clinton giving a speech about the potential discovery.

Microbes on Mars don't have the same potential for giving your country a dominating advantage for decades like an interstellar vessel with intelligent beings on it has.
How exactly would the USA, or any other country, dominate these vastly more advanced beings to control them?
They wouldn't, but they might have a chance for exclusive knowledge transfer giving them an enormous boost in science and technology.
I just don't understand why a more advanced species would want to, or allow themselves to be involved in human geopolitics.
They don't. However "advanced" they can't help but be a little naive.

Maybe they're interested in our culture and willing to exchange some toys for knowledge.
For the lols, probably.
Keep them locked in subterranean vaults of course.
Just so you can avoid the clickbait:
"[...] and a new report concluding no evidence UAPs represented extraterrestrial tech has sent ufology into a tailspin"

Oh OK, NASA will disclose it like they did with the footage of a UFO entering earth(1)?
For those who are interested, these two podcasts are insightful (2) and (3).
