I’ve been ideating with a friend about how to integrate AI deeper into his research. After discussing these concepts for a few hours last week at a BBQ, I put together this proposal for him to test. I was fascinated by what we came up with here and am curious how this hits for others. I’m obviously biased as a developer and to me everything should be code and everyone should operate like an engineer. That may not be right. Also, it might be. Ha
I've gotten so much from my experiences with Star Trek, and I've adamantly tried to consume every piece of media produced (a lifelong pursuit). I shared some of my love in a recent episode of a podcast I co-host, Zengineering Podcast. The episode is an exploration of what we love about Star Trek contrasted with what we love about Star Wars. This is perhaps my favorite episode of our podcast for many reasons, and I hope you enjoy it!!
The keyterms listed in Webmaster Tools are just a count of their occurrence on your site. We've played with this and can very obviously see our site move up and down in the rankings based on simply changing the number of times certain terms appear across our sites. We have a number of new sites where there probably aren't many other factors going into our ranking, so this is especially apparent.
We've seen these changes take on average 2-6 weeks to get noticed through webmaster tools. We've made many rapid changes to a few of our sites and it has clearly confused google. These few sites have been listing the wrong keyterms for months and we haven't seen any sign of them changing. One site even randomly switches back and forth between listing relevant keyterms and listing latin leftover from our Lorem Ipsum that was accidentally released while the site was being built.
Moral of my story is to not make too many drastic changes to your site, but if you've made a few, just relax and let google run it's nonsense. If it doesn't return to your old content, then I'm not sure what you can do.
The most important thing to learn about Google is that there really isn't much you can learn. Just pay attention to numbers and try to get a "sense" for what is going on. I'm not an SEO or Search expert, but I think experts just have a lot of time in front of the numbers.
followup thoughts: the novelty of something new in the workplace (like a new desk, new chair, new location, or new computer) always wears off, diminishing some of the positive effects it's had. standing and moving around for 8-12 hours a day might introduce new problems or ailments, but there's no way those problems will be worse than sitting, curled up in a chair-jail for 8-12 hours a day.
i've been using my standing desk setup for 2 weeks. it's amazing. all of the energy that used to go into shaking legs and fidgeting and not focussing is now gone. i'm a little more tired at the end of the day (probably a good thing), and my knees, ankles and feet are sore at the end of the day as well. i'm not positive that's going to go away, but it makes sense that it would, and everything i've read confirms that.
my back doesn't hurt from sitting anymore and my arms and wrists are in much better ergonomic positions as well (i used to do some ergo design as a manufacturing engineer).
i think there are tremendous psychological and physiological benefits. i'm more focussed, i'm more satisfied, and i feel like i'm getting more done (obviously all subjective). i haven't found my attention drifting at all in the last few weeks, and have not once thought to myself, "damnit, just get back to work." if i get distracted, or need to think about something, i just walk around a little. i'm not stuck in a chair-jail. i also keep a soccer ball nearby, and find i'm often dancing a little when music is on. wonderful.
just got an ergo mat to go under my feet. should make a big difference as well. i'm still not done setting it up. i've been stacking boxes at different heights to test locations for the keyboard and mouse. i'm close.
once you take your desk apart and setup a standing desk, you are forced to use it. this is much different than an exercise ball which you can easily ditch for your chair-jail.
