OpinionX | 2x Software Engineers (Full-Stack) | 100% Remote + Location Flexible | Pre-Seed Stage

OpinionX is a research tool for stack ranking people's priorities. 5000 teams use our product to identify and measure what matters most to their customers, colleagues or community (incl. teams from Salesforce, Mastercard, Google, Shopify, etc).

Looking for two full-stack developers. Our tech stack is Java, Typescript and Vue.js (data science experience a bonus but not essential). We're currently wrapping up our pre-seed round and the team today is just the two co-founders (CEO & CTO), so you'd be joining an early-stage company with promising indicators of early PMF and solid traction (new users growing ~23% MoM since June 2022).

Since learning two years ago about the story behind David Friedberg's WeatherBill pivot in 2011, I've constantly referred back to it in conversations with other founders and product managers. Seems to me like a textbook perfect pivot that should be studied by everyone setting up their own startup (before they need to pivot in the first place).

Hey, original author of the article (only just discovered it was shared on HN). I really appreciate both your comments about how we can improve the post, have added it to my to-do list to update this to put them in a better order and to make the self-referencing part about OpinionX more transparent (outside of the list of 99 companies, I think).

As much as the original order was indeed mostly random, I also placed them so that each 'pair' side by side were roughly the same length, purely for aesthetic reasons. I think alphabetical order might just make more sense.

These are obviously (?) mostly facetious, but for people interested in actual startup ideas, worth thinking more about problems than just market opportunities:

"The way to get startup ideas is not to try to think of startup ideas. It's to look for problems, preferably problems you have yourself." — Paul Graham on 'How to Get Startup Ideas' - http://paulgraham.com/startupideas.html

Further reading; here's the initial problem and customer segment that 99 of the biggest companies in tech today started with originally: "99 Startup Problems" - https://www.opinionx.co/99-problems/

Reddit moderators are a whole breed of their own. Any that I've encountered (mostly for 100k+ subreddits) have lost any shred of empathy they once had.

This looks really cool, but I was hoping to see a super short video or demo that shows it in action. With such a punchy value prop, it feels a bit like a "see it to believe it" product.

100% agreed Nick, easy to focus on these types of vanity metrics to give yourself encouragement during a hard fundraising round. Looking forward to using DocSend later this year for our seed round at www.opinionx.co, I've had you guys bookmarked since December after coming across a great article of yours.

I gave Reddit a try recently and just couldn't get into it. Low karma really limited my ability to get involved.

I've been enjoying getting involved on Indie Hackers, I've been writing lots of posts and engaging with people there the past few weeks, like this one about the impact of Product-Led Growth on user researchers: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/i-interviewed-100-people-h...

Keep coming back to Indie Hackers because people are engaging positively and I'm finding little communities to follow. Never found that with Reddit.

I'm the co-founder and CEO of startup called OpinionX (www.opinionx.co) - we've built a dynamic survey tool where people vote on each other's opinions to identify consensus at scale. Based in Dublin, Ireland.

2021 is the year of virtual conferences. This list includes 28 events confirmed for 2021 (most of which are virtual), along with 19 events I'm keeping track of which haven't been confirmed yet for 2021 but have been great in previous years.

This list is also available as a Twitter thread for easier sharing: https://twitter.com/MyOpinionX/status/1346831251085406209

Any events missing that you think I should add?

Great question! Right now it's open ended to allow participants to leave whenever they want (not overly high tech!)

We've got loads of plans for how we can improve this over time though, using NLP & word-embedding to provide a broad participation across all the core themes and powering the order of opinoins by decision-trees, k-means clustering and matrix factoristation so that we're showing the right opinions to the right people to get a predictable view of the entire population of users.

100%. When trying to explain OpinionX in the earlier days (before our first MVP), people often found that comparing it to Reddit helped them understand what we were building. It was probably the most common comparison we got.

This is frustratingly common with traditional surveys. In our conversations with user researchers we found that researchers often know what they want to ask, but they end up breaking it up into loads of different (often vague) questions in order to retrofit their research objective into survey format. Because you're less limited in scope with an open-survey like OpinionX, you're able to much more directly set the direction and question of a survey. At the end of the day, it's up to the researcher to write the best question possible, but we feel that OpinionX gives more breathing room and allows them to ask more directly if needed.

Hi Peter, sorry I understand that this isn't the ideal setup for a demo. Right now, all OpinionX surveys are automatically set up to collect email addresses (mainly because we haven't implemented a caching system to enable participants to re-join existing surveys).

We've just linked a normal OpinionX survey as our demo for now as we haven't built something specific that's better suited for a landing page demo yet - this is on our to-do list though, we know it's not the most user friendly for trying it out.

Participants don't see the voting results of any statements before they vote, limiting any potential groupthink herding. Also, opinions are presented in different orders for different users, so any impact of them voting differently on the first one they see gets balanced out as the voting grows.

Thanks man! There's a lot of use cases for a platform like this, so we're focusing our efforts on user researchers but we agree that it can be (and already has been) used in very interesting and different ways.

We've already seen people use it for large-scale needs assessments, school curriculum co-creation, office Christmas party planning, startup problem statement creation, pizza company market research and more :)

pol.is was certainly an inspiration. We were really interested in the power of wikisurveys broadly, including pol.is and AllOurIdeas. When we started working on OpinionX, we couldn't find any wikisurvey tools that weren't really complex to set up (especially if you didn't have a technical background), so we figured we should try and democratise the wikisurvey model for broader use in a self-serve SaaS tool.

After talking with a bunch of user researchers, we realised that a lot of the research process is stupidly clunky. User researchers often run a survey with open ended questions, manually group responses into themes and then turn that into a normal multiple-choice survey based on what gets said most. Overall it can take a full week of work and is pretty frustrating.

How our tool makes this process better:

- By analysing user votes we surface the most important topics/opinions, not just the topic with the most submissions.

- You get qualitative input alongside quantitative analysis, making product prioritisation way easier.

- By letting users submit new opinions you can discover new insights you never considered before.

We're in the process of setting up a freemium subscription model. Right now it's free to create your first survey [1] and we've got a sample survey going too if you want to just play around with it from a participant perspective [2] (it asks for your email but feel free to put anything in, it doesn't verify it).
