(2025) might be worth adding

I'm just a guy but have recently gotten into running again, ran a marathon about a decade ago, and got fit for new shoes last week (New Balance 1080s).

Conventional wisdom is running shoes will last about 300-500 miles but this is not a concrete rule. The insoles will form to your feet and lose springiness and support. The soles will wear down reducing traction and lose support.

I tend to wear down the topsides around the outside forefoot and big toe area and the materials starts to tear.

It's not really a problem, per se, to run in old shoes but the experience will likely be better with new ones. Technology and materials get better, lighter.

I think a proper fit matters more than new/old. My oldest pair of shoes I still wear are from 2006 (Birkenstock Boston)

Good luck, running is high impact and best to run on trails/dirt/grass when ramping up again rather than pavement.

> It is impossible to make everyone happy. Don't try

The older I get the more valuable this lesson

>I always cooked what I wanted to eat and was always correct.

This is similar advice to what I've read recently about the target audience for technical/blog writings - only write to one person and it's best if that person is you.

The "Eyes on the Solar System" live visual tracker is super fun to play around with as well. Came across the Arrokoth page while reading about [1] another set of "contact-binary" space rocks.

I don't have an immediate direct source but read yesterday GitHub stars are being "obfuscated" because they're being scraped to spam popular projects -- or something similar.

Edit found the link [0], do not believe it mentions reason but links github blog

From Github [1]: > These endpoints and views currently expose public lists of stargazers and watchers, and this information has increasingly been misused to collect user data for spam activities which negatively impacts user experience and platform trust.

I genuinely don't understand the relevance of the square vs. star map layout - does that matter or is there an analogy I don't understand?

I figured it was the most reasonable conclusion via Occam's Razor. Economical and the illusion of futurism

I think above commentators may be referring to heavy multi-times-per-day usage patterns rather than casual or semi-casual.

Genuinely curious what the golden goose refers to here?

Not quite "age of sail" but I find Endurance one of the most captivating stories.

> The diff is still treated as the source of truth. I'd almost reverse that.

I think this is interesting but it seems brittle. It makes me think of the Agile Manifesto "Working software over comprehensive documentation" - not that I evangelize for Agile.

Right on, I've been quite bored from 8-4 hours lately and have been commenting a lot around forums etc and can relate. Writing articles like this is more productive. I agree about the AI comments, it's basically written in the HN Guidelines "Please don't complain about tangential annoyances" or multiple others like "Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something."

Why was the title changed? It no longer reflects the original title but did previously

Arguing has negative connotations and conveys the author is bringing up minor quibbles for the sake of being pedantic: "Is the sky blue?" -> "No, the sky is not blue we just perceive it to be that way due to..."

My main complaint of the article, though, is the lack of nuance. Especially amongst complex topics where, maybe the definition of correct is not established, or there are multiple correct/valid interpretations.

See below "The Blind Men and the Elephant" fable:

Cool write up and cool site. Off the top of my head the only other places I see spiral ribbon-springs like this are in a wall mounted thermostat.

This is pretty cool. One of the parts I love the most of boats/sailing is how they're basically the culmination of thousands of years of human science, engineering and technology. I especially like how this is published in an Irish paper about the ship sailing along the coast there.

When I was in my late teens a Spanish cousin took me to the maritime/naval museum in Madrid and I didn't have much context for things at the time. Look forward to visiting again at some point.

Interesting, it even uses the clippy emoji for resumes!

I think OP is reading into it too much , it seems like a minor embellishment and I never personally correlated emojis with LLMs.

I understand the sentiment but it's understated how important a dog is/can be for people, especially those living alone. OP should be aware of all options but a win-win solution enabling them to keep the dogs is paramount. I have big concerns about the "tying them up in the woods" part, however, and do not want to be verbose with my thoughts without being prompted by OP.

I can relate to your situation. I strongly suggest you broaden your job search and look for anything that pays decently. A lot of this will depend on your geo location. Maybe some sort of night time work will help with the dog situation until you get back on your feet. Happy to expand more but just a quick start. Best of luck to you
