Sprints are to knock down the high achievers and provide an opportunity for substandard developers to all appear as if there is progress. A place to hide, if you will.

All of the high functioning teams I’ve worked on didn’t have any kind of agile structure.

Agile can be done well, but more often than not it isn’t.
