This is a very sensitive issue, but frankly men will always try to hit on women. However, right now this is completely ignored. It looks like everyone is trying to sweep this under the carpet and hopes this way, sexism in tech will go away. It won't.
A major reason for that is, because right now, men are only told what is NOT okay, without telling them what IS okay. This makes a lot of men behave very strangely in towards women. Firstly, because they don't want to appear sexist for the woman's sake and secondly, because they don't want to be accused of sexual harassment. Women feel this and for that reason feel unwelcome in tech. It seems like no one tries to reference any gender study researxh even though this is such a huge problem in tech and is holding up our industry.
A way to solve this, would be starting to create an open culture about how men and women can work together in tech, NOT leaving out the whole dating aspect.
A first step into this direction would be to clarify what IS okay and not only what is NOT okay.
For instance, telling a woman she is gorgeous without asking for anything in return is okay. Then the woman can make up her mind if she is interested or not. This is how it works and it will happen anHowever, basing a business transaction on sexual favours is not tolerated.
This has to be more specific of course, however, the only guideline being "inappropriate behaviour won't be tolerated" is just not enough to solve sexism in tech and to get more women into tech.
High school isn't much about learning all the different subjects, it's much more about learning how to behave with people aka social skill. The author should put his daughter back into high school again in order not to have a socially incompetent daughter when she's older.
1. There are data entry tasks, writing descriptions for online shops, filling out surveys etc. We are looking for partners who have smaller tasks like this that they would like to see completed by our almost 70,000 users now.
2. It's targeted to people who are often on the road, where they have spare time that they want to use to make money. Students, freelancers, travelers come to mind.
3. Tasks vary between mini tasks of <$1 that can be done very quickly and tasks for $10+, which users see later once they have had several tasks approved by our clients, so that we know that they can complete work reliably.
I think the HN community will much prefer having an unmoderated HN over a moderated HN with a bit higher quality as the main reason why people come here, is that the content here is solely selected by the community.
If however, people find out that HN is much more a controlled environment, they will surely turn away from HN. So instead of trying to control the whole thing just in return for a bit of increased quality, rather sacrifice a bit of quality for an open HN. Of course there can be some moderation, however, it becomes a bit tricky when titles and content is changed, and upvotes are controled.
To be honest, I think there are way too many apps out there just like yours that are way way better. So instead of putting effort into marketing your app, I would put effort into making an app that fills a need that no one else fills instead.
Let the product do the marketing for you. Of course you need to do a little marketing yourself, but the more unique the product, the more your marketing efforts will scale it. In turn, I think with your product you can do a looot of marketing and nothing will come out of it, because the product isn't unique enough.
There are times in a startup, where you simply have to do the work without thinking too much. This is for instance when you have finished all your wireframes and then you simply have to code it down for two months. This is simply grunt work, where you don't need to think much, you only need to get it done.
Then there are phases in a startup, where you need insane creativity. These phases are for instance after you've found product/market fit, say you got to 10,000 users with your product, however, now you need to figure out how to get to 100,000.
In these times it's not worth at all pushing 18h days, it's much better being a balanced human being who goes out with friends, does their exercise and eats well, because all you need at that point is ideas and creativity.
I don't think this is valid anymore. The author states that team is more important than product. However, if you have a great team you will always have a great product. If you have a bad team, you will never have a good product. For that reason, team = product, so product is removed from the equation.
Then you have these three statements
1. When a great team meets a lousy market, market wins
This is probably true, since a great team can win in any market, no matter how small - or they simply open a new market.
2. When a lousy team meets a great market, market wins.
I don't think this is correct as this is not the case for 99 out of 100 startups and it normally only holds true in really, really strong markets. However, in most cases, a lousy team means a lousy product, means no product market fit.
As an example you can take Facebook. Insane market, however, it took an extremely good team, in our case Mark Zuckerberg with a unique launch strategy to finally open that market of social networks.
3. When a great team meets a great market, something special happens.
This holds true and this basically happened with Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Instagram and all of the unicorn startups.
Interesting, especially since a severage package of $30k-$50k or how much ever it is, is basically like a seed funding round for each employee that is let go. Could be interesting...Microsoft Mafia :)
