Maybe this is an idiotic thought so forgive me if that's the case.
Does it seem that a lot of this is "we hollowed out these areas for economic efficiency and then all the dudes (regardless of race...) became layabouts and drug addicts". I grew up in Kenya after the SAPs were imposed by the IMF and I vaguely remember complaints of alcoholism just spiking. I guess my dumb thought is maybe dudes just need to build, farm, or produce something tangible otherwise they become heroin addicts.
One of the cooler exp in my career was Theodore Ts'o responding to a (in retrospect dumb) query about some latency issues we were witnessing with fsync. I feel like twitter enables more of those interactions
It's not about stuff, it's about having other people. Some ( apparently a whole lot more than I thought) people find the lack of social interaction in American towns and cities depressing and alienating. Moreover you may have a lot things to keep you entertained in your home, but I doubt that yours is reflective of the average American home. Most people (I'm guessing now) probably just watch T.V and argue online...
What about the problem that retail investors necessarily don't have good insights about individual companies (or stock pickers) but still want to benefit from economic growth?
