Just for the record, my iPhone autocorrected my attempt to type the word “handle” to “ya die”.
It’s not a phrase that I ever use, so it’s unclear to me how that became a first choice candidate for Apple’s autocorrect mechanism.
Being in the middle of writing a suicide note, having Apple make such an autocorrection is, at the least, unwanted incompetence. “Ya die” isn’t something I want to see emanating from Apple’s autocorrect mechanism, ever - whether in the middle of a suicide note or not.
There’s also a huge disconnect here. Just because I say some absurd theory about mkultra in the 21st century, doesn’t mean I seriously believe it. I just observe and fit in theories like everyone else trying to make sense of their limited perception reality. Jumping on the mental illness attack bandwagon is most of why I’m out of here. If that’s how I’m perceived, just for stating a non-serious theory, then I’m thankful to almost be dead.
No common ground. Take notes, if you seriously want to figure out how to relate to someone who thinks like I do, someone who truly is at the end.
This isn’t a cry for help for me. It’s to help others understand my point of view to help others before they get to my age. I’m not going to change.

Telling me imperatively to “seek it” is indicative of your hubris and provincial viewpoint of the world. You’re in zero position to know what technology is out there in the wild. It’s a system bigger than you and me. And it was blindly obvious that my theory was to goad people like you who would obviously jump on the offensive regarding “mental illness”.

Serious about what? That the auto correct happened? I have no idea why my hands always end up typing such troll shit. At the least it’s incompetence by Apple.

I have bit to share about being suicidal as a lifetime pursuit. I decided around 11 years old that I wasn’t going to participate in life and essentially committed soft suicide. I’ve had decades of persistent suicidal desire since then.
In the past year, I’ve given away all of my money (less than a million bucks). Just gave away a few thousand to a business owner yesterday who was being cheap and petty. Told him to donate it to his favorite charity.
Homeless and alone, broken and finally close to absolute destitution, I’ve thoroughly prepared for suicide. It’s a combination of gratitude for the end being near and a nagging fear of the unknown. Sorry, but the fact is nobody knows what happens to them when they die until it happens. You’ll either experience nothing, or you’ll know there is existence for yourself after death. Those who believe either way (atheist - nothingness, religious - eternity or reincarnation, unification etc) are all potentially right, with no scientific way of proving anything to the living.
My short time on this planet has given me a clear perception of the existence of higher intelligences in our midst yet I remain committed to wanting to die as soon as possible. I find the machinations of society to be utterly disappointing. I made up my mind five years ago and I’m finally close to the end now. Hoping to be gone before years end and would like to be left alone so I can die in peace.
Silicon Valley is corrupt. I became a digital voyeur long ago to better understand the machines we have built and I’m disgusted. Every moment now is another reminder of why I’m thankful to almost be dead. The sick, cruel part is that my suicide is likely part of a evolutionary process to “weed out” those who can’t handle being a voyeur. I was fourth picked for g&t. First and second pick ended up being quite successful, as did the third picked. One has a high up, prestigious position at Amazon and the other retired from Microsoft wealthy.
Me, I smoke weed and that’s about the only thing I’ve really done consistently since high school.. more consistently than music, and programming, even.
Frankly, I wish I had been better separated from the other kids. I would have been far happier in middle school just hanging around other nice, smart people. (With a few exceptions, the smart kids tended to be kind). The mixture with the “gen pop” led to bullying, repeated physical abuse and harassment by other kids from ages 10-12. This was decades ago when physical abuse amongst minors was often ignored, even by police.
By freshman year of high school, I was worn down and switched back to some non-honors classes mid-term. This unfortunately led to dysfunctional friendships with the “cool” kids (same bully crowd), introduction to drugs and a low achievement life. There was some form of Florence nightingale syndrome involved here, due to unresolved physical abuse leading to friendships with the abusers in high school.
Separating gifted children for accelerated learning is great. Ignoring social development by blindly sticking all kids together in unstructured environments where bullying and physical abuse is allowed to persist will override any hope for some kids. I know, I was there. Still here.
You’re right. One can’t assure that won’t happen unless you can ensure that every outgoing packet hasn’t been tampered with inside your computer. But that problem can also be tackled as part of a solution to reduce risk but not eliminate it.
How about simply using a new style of webcam that uses a physical shutter when active? Any reason I can’t go on amazon and buy one? Are these illegal?
Sadly you’d want analog push button switch on mics only. Latch as well ok if done securely.
You could jump through tons of hoops to minimize risk for the above but given the complexity of a typical computer, most won’t have a chance as you noted.
If you whitelisted all your activity and took the other precautions noted (and if you have clean hygiene) then it would be much more difficult for your strong adversary as your nation state would need to own your box remotely. And it is possible to defend against that sort of thing. Yes if you just have indiscriminate traffic coming and going, defense becomes astronomically more difficult.
You used “either”, then “nor”, sorry I lost the point you were making. Wasn’t sure on your point about the adversary already owning the pipe.
Tailored exploitation is a good point though.
Admittedly RPi isn’t any current advice except for outdated hobbyist advice. If I cared to defend against nation state I’d avoid gen purpose CPU’s altogether and focus on in house manufactured minimal circuits, possibly fpga’s and printers or some other trusted peripherals. I’d build my own keyboards too.
The poster was concerned about video being hacked. This would be hard to hide, at least for being owned in real-time, if one were keeping track of the packets coming and going. If you’re whitelisting all your outbound and disallowing inbound, and if your decoupled passive nids is set up right you at least have the physical network layer covered.
If you’re targeted for tailored exploitation then you’d be considering a scif anyway if you really have something that important to hide. In a pinch, a faraday cage would probably be a good idea if you can set it up right. Don’t trust any devices that come in or out.
Instead of assuming you could lock down your internet pipe. Use a RPi as a security appliance with strong whitelisted firewall policy. At least have some insight into what traffic is going to and from your LAN.
Could also put in an entirely passive NIDS on a physical layer in-line with your network’s service entrance. Very difficult for anyone to defeat, when done right.
When I got hi as a teenager I’d hallucinate the most intricate music you could imagine but with no way to “record” it. Would be fascinating if we one day had the means to tap into visual and audible hallucinations (perceptions) in the brain.
One has to wonder if there’s political reason for this decision by the NYT, given Ms. Sandvik’s early involvement with Edward Snowden. Surely this must have made for an interesting dynamic at such a newspaper.
