Human social norms; definitions of optimizing for self, do not have to be maintained though; see the decline in religion.

Human society is not fractal; we die off, new social value stores come about; optimize for self could be defined as “not build environment destroying technology.”

A synthetic machine kept running but never allowed new inputs will just exist in long term belief in its old bullshit

Go have kids, teach them what you want.

STEM minded folks need to eat their own dog food; your sensibilities are not divine mandate.

The other billions don’t owe deference to scientists any more than they do priests.

No scientist is a divine being. Their attitudes can be very human; they think their knowledge and skills is irreplaceable and the social system while trying to pretend that’s objective and could never be leveraged in typically corrupt human ways given their very human being.

In the end you’re one of billions bleating for others to follow the path you lay out. Where is the real or imagine social obligation to specifically serve you or any of the rest of the people here who make up a tiny fraction of the species?

Others think you should learn to grow your own food and kill your steaks rather than exploit the labor of others.

The free market of ideas is not just for selling widgets but tent pole social movements.

Linux… on the contrary I think it sucks

We have yet to make a technology that will stand the test of time; Linux is not what humans will use in another 100 years.

Even with competition look at the music industry and content industry churning out piles of shovelware expecting billion dollar box office and massive reach because “that’s how it works”.

It’s not competition that drive’s innovation but public acceptance. Linux sucks for the same reasons the other things suck; nostalgia.

“The market”, us, is accepting rehashes of the same old shit. That’s antithetical to competition; where’s the competition for 32 hour work weeks and universal healthcare that works; mired in economic theory that coincidentally empowers a minority of billionaires we all complain about.

What competition when it’s all “sit still, carry on maintenance value stores of yesteryear.”

I refuse to put on myself obligation to memorize Bloomberg is rich. They’re each just one meat based cassette tape equivocating from memory why I should kowtow to their fiat wealth through narrative I never witnessed take place.

Where’s the real competition in ideas; the old ought to be ingratiating themselves on the youth for obvious reasons rather than the inverse of forcing us to prop them up.

We could say this for a long time now; all the historical squabbles over religious story is evidence useless ideation is an innate human feature that wastes time/resources, and the advancement of skill at implementation is what’s actually improved our day to day.

None of us had a say in the choices about office life before us.

It’s been labeled in the past an intentional effort to sell cars, gas, and take people out of their communities as social control over time and agency.

I think given all the ways the people of the recent past have been shown wrong, we do not owe doing as they expect by default. It’s not as if they’re capable of putting up much fight at this point.

Intel vs AMD… but x86 sucks; spectre and the like, power hungry ornate designs

Apple vs Windows… closed source and otherwise encumbered

Android vs iOS… App Store pay to play, restricted or 100% closed in iOS’ case

As “systems” your choices of “best” come with numerous drawbacks

It’s not just a Hollywood thing; the money men ruined all creative outlets: https://www.escapistmagazine.com/bobby-kotick-wants-to-take-...

Finance is nothing more than rent seeking. The correction required is society wide movement to dethrone finance.

Skill generating ideas is over rated.

Implementation is when skill matters.

I can imagine post scarcity Star Trek like ideas but not implement them. My skills at CE and SWE allow me to implement reasonable solutions there.

Chasing ideas for the sake of chasing ideas is a form of bike shedding and premature optimization.

A commonly held position is that your existence is meaningless and no one else owes putting some “greater good” on themselves to validate your sensibilities or shield you from growing your own potatoes.

“Commonly held position” is a terrible metric. Look what the primates are doing to their environment due to commonly held positions.

It was once a commonly held position humans serve god kings. Where do these commonly held social norms come from I wonder? Feels very top down and intentional.

Who cares Harvard even exists is a commonly held belief. People just don’t speak such things because of the abuse they take to maintain society.

Please, primates who are destroying themselves; bleat and bray at me more about your moral high ground.
