it makes private energy storage a viable investment option. You can just invest in a large battery (or other storage system) and make a profit over buying/selling energy.

I really hope, this happens on a big scale and further reduces the dependency on fossil fuels (at least over 24h. winter is a different question)

unfortunately in German, but here's a recent talk on how to self-host your won music streaming:

you can scroll through the slides to get the idea

while I certainly do oppose many of the cuts of our civil liberties, I think that statement is quite an exaggeration...

FYI: here are the videos of the latest matrix conference: [1]. I think there's a lot of interesting stuff going on!

also, instead of hosting your own server or using some (more or less well-financed) public servers, you can simply throw some money at [2] to pay for hosting for your group of friends or family or whatever. (not affiliated, but I like the idea)

Here's a good talk that gives some advice on how to make good stickers yourself:

There's a big difference between the materials that's used for the sticker itself (paper, plastic) and the glue they used. By now I have a good feeling about the "removability" of a sticker once i have it in my hand.

What's that "NUDES" sign in the background?

"Following an official letter submitted to the United Nations by the Republic of Türkiye, the country's name has been officially changed to Türkiye at the UN.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that a letter had been received on June 1 from the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” for all affairs." [1]

"Foreign Minister Cavuşoğlu said in a tweet that the move would "increase our country's brand value".

The country’s English language public broadcaster TRT World said, the move would help to disassociate the country’s image from the large bird of the same name."[2]

I think Parent is using a Gigaset GS5
jones89176
·vor 10 Monaten·discuss
Oh, hello, i recognize your username from the jolla forums :-) I do have two Gigasets here (GX290 and GX4 pro) waiting to be flashed, but I still need to finally set up a windows machine to make a proper backup of the stock android images and generate the scatter files. Like with most of the SoC-Vendors, the MTK tools are quite a PITA. I have to download some weird binaries from some weird websites. How can it be that there are no official tools available for things like this?!

And there is one more Question I have since you're already here ;-) I'm already doing embedded Linux development in my day job, so I would say I have quite some knowledge in that area. However I haven't found a good introduction to this whole "porting" topic. Do you have some advice on how to get started in that direction? What exactly happens when I flash (say) sailfish onto some (specific) Android version? Why do I even need this? How does the whole libhybris thing work and why don't people just use the binary drivers from some Android image? It's all very confusing to me. Especially since people from the android corner seem to use different terminology that the embedded Linux crowd...

anyway, thanks for your work so far. I hope I can join the SFOS users (again) soon!

> "banking apps still require Android compatibility layer"

I would say that this is really not the OS's problem, but the bank's problem. I find it absolutely intolerable that there are banks that force me to use a OS from one (or two) specific vendors.

Same goes for public transportation services (German Bahn Card is now only available in their app) or post mail services (German Post "Mobile Stamp" is only available in their official app).

I wouldn't say "Sailfish failed". It's still well alive, mainained and useable. All they need is some more traction and a proper business case
jones89176
·vor 11 Monaten·discuss
Ah yes, sailfish is actually pretty usable. (Unlike Ubuntu Touch, tbh). I've used it in the past on my Nexus5 for some years. However, they are still not 100% open source and they're too much into the AI-Hype as of recently (Mind2). Also, I'd like to have more official ports. It's such a hassle to be dependent on that one guy who maintains that port for your device...

my family takes care of a large-ish forest, so I have to help since my early teens. Let me tell you: think twice, it's f*ckin dangerous. Chainsaws, winches, heavy trees falling and breaking in unpredictable ways. I had a couple of close calls myself. Recently a guy from a neighbor village was squashed to death by a root plate that tilted.

I often think about quitting tech myself, but becoming a full-time lumberjack is certainly not an alternative for me.
