Well played. Technology is cyclical, after all.

I live in SE Europe, 800k city, part of EU. This notion that public transport is well developed over here applies only to more developed parts of the continent. I am in Croatia and trains are... a joke to say the least. In a 800k city we don't have any notion of rapid urban transit. For us a tram is best you can get. Recently I took public transport for fun, took me 1h to get 9km and that's in 8pm, when there is no peak traffic.

I have to drive a car everywhere.

> metal road

TIL metal road is actually gravel road in NZ.

Where is this? Just ballpark it.

I am just wishing for a day when someone will say to me "Earth is 6000 years old" with a straight face. I'll cherish that day forever in my mind.

Not sure I follow the logic.

Been to Bosnia once or twice. Still hitting plum brandy. They just added beer into the mix.

This sounds dystopian.

I went through a distance learning course and I don't see this being far from it. I mean, it's not like anyone will have to come to the brick and mortar classroom just to sit there and listen to this AI thing talk about CS, everyone will do it from their room.

So on one hand you have a lack of proper instructor and on the other hand lack of social contact. Imagine being 18 and sitting at home alone just you and this AI.

Sounds ok if you are older, but not for the amount of money Harvard is asking for it. I am not even sure what you are paying for here.

Why does Reddit need sales? Genuine question. My guess is to sell ads?

Computer != smartphone. Social media == smartphone.

I have used PayPal once or twice some 15 years ago when I bought some stuff on eBay, but never since, I never had any need afterwards. I didn't quite understand it back then, I was rather young.

Nowadays I buy from web shops when I need something, I give them my one time Revolut debit card number and that's it, risk free.

So my question is:

Why would someone use PayPal? What is the use case here?

It's because no one is enforcing these rules. I've driven drunk and ran red lights and sped until I got nailed for each of these. I still cut in line (or whatever the term is for cars) when I can because in 20 years of urban driving I saw a cop pull someone over for that ONCE. So why wait in line when every time 10 other cars cut the line.

Wow. That seems very conservative.

Over here in Croatia they only look at your last 3-6 pay slips and that's it. I own a small LLC and I gave myself a raise before taking out a mortgage, then after I got the mortgage I returned back to my original salary.

On a 2.200 EUR before tax salary I was cleared for a 150.000 EUR mortgage, but could have went even above that. They don't care about deposits or savings, even though owning a credit card and investing briefly (40 EUR each month for 2-3 months, then you can stop investing) in one of the bank's funds does lower your interest rate (which was 2.48% before New Year, now it over 3%).

When I see a conviction I'll be satisfied. You can arrest pretty much anybody.

I worked at the same company for six years. After that I job hopped. Now, 5 years lsrer, I still have 2-3 good friends I see regularly from the first company. I don't know a single person from any of the other companies.

I did a lot of job hopping and can tell you all projects are a mess. So for me it's all about the money. And having a hobby project where I can have fun.

These people are determined by their geography, history, internal tribal politics, external forces and religion. There is only so much an outsider can do. Best to just let them play out their destiny and keep an eye out so no new rogue players use them as a springboard.

I worked for a Slovenian company for 6 years. I am from a neighbouring country with a somewhat similar language, but never moved to Slovenia. I was an outsourced member, let's say. After about 3 years I realized I can write one hell of an email. Speaking? I couldn't buy a loaf of bread, I was a bonafide idiot when I went to visit them.

On a scale of 1 to invention of fire/wheel/smelting/electricity/computers, how relevant is this? I have trouble comprehending the historical impact.
