>..Nothing in life ... has any chance of succeeding without strenuous practice; and this is capable of overcoming anything..

---Diogenes (L) on Diogenes, arch-Cynic, VI.2.71

Afaik not formalised in Lean4, but sounds like optimism

Most of D's other stuff imho is optimism taken to its clear-eyed extreme. ya know. the way a very best version of us could always unironically RELY on HN [,after much practice]

>so those whose training has been of the opposite kind derive more pleasure from despising pleasure than from the pleasures themselves.

Might be why professional Nihilists admire Cynics (ie, for their ... unaffected comedy)

I try not to let Thiel drive me. How that could work is by conceiving of him as a friend or even lover (not mildly successful, obviously, but I try)

He's done things he won't ever write about, that surprise me. Like using hafus for propaganda. Planting his own people (and most who get upset by mimetics only think they know who these are) in the audience. This guy understands his enemies deeper than the enemies understand themselves. Maybe even runs _their_ propaganda by _multiple_ frontier instances _after_ analysing it himself

(In the postGPT era, his own literary outpu-- uh, side-effects*-- therefore has to drop)

If I have to be honest.. I'd need "medical aids" to think about his thoughts in good faith.. so far I have not _felt_ such a need

(Maybe bc I've not felt myself to identify with his enemy.. [[Allez CH!!]])

*The writings/speeches are meant to teach only as a bonus: would this "fact" work as a band-aid?

Silicon is the Facebook of solid-state apps.

Institutions look for the "killer app" but it's the

network effects that makes unaffordable the playing fee. any entity that wants to disrupt the house has to .. ship all the _tooling_ at once [and all made of/dependent on nanotubes, for instance]..

Aside from that: Carbon nanotubes shareholders will have to learn basic strat from a future Social Network that puts Meta in the recycle bin (short of emptying it, so that could well be Meta reinventing itself!)

And so it tickles me to think about Paganism as a gateway drug to "Scientism"[0]. Because unlike some organized religion whose elites do not yell loud enough that "science & engineering do not rival God!" even if they routinely think that in their reading rooms.

I liked your use of QR but how would you know if a large segment of potential converts have been primed to feel of them as marks of the Beast?

(Aside: recent k-drama with a "gen Z" protag

The other direction this could go is "science-comms-design". Staffed by ex-hard-scientists, not philo types. You with it bro? That is one rare place where... (do I still belong to the motherly-mid cult of unrequited rivalry with "aristocracy-friendly" Hahvahd+Stanfohd?)

Nuance. It doesn't seem that the "public geniuses" themselves are driving impactful decision-making, but well-meaning folks in one of many thin layers "surrounding" them. The relevant point though is that this layer wants to be seen as forward-thinking (they could be advocating vaccines or crypto in previous eras, so you can't blame them for the "incorrectness" of the fad).

Nor are they sycophants; I'd expect they know independence of thought is a prerequisite for getting into those positions

A rough picture of what these guys smell like-- in personality, not in role-- are the "journalistic-influencers": Peter Robinson of Hoover, Dwarkesh, etc. I hope dang or mod-wannabes are different (maybe they don't actually aspire to be impactful) ?

Question: did these journalistic-influencers have to go through a LinkedIn stage where they vy for the public-geniuses' attention? I suspect not-- even in the case of Dwarkesh. I'm not saying there was no seduction involved.. the seduction is not entirely legible..

Eric Weinstein seems to belong to another layer, one that is more like a sinecure, providing moral-support only. Is he in the same layer as Lex Fridman? Maybe. Well-managed glee/narcissism is necessary but not sufficient

How about Fidji Simo?? Or the CFO? "Agrippa" Bosworth? Do early investors think that sama labels himself "genius" in his own dreams?

Calling these guys "Mafiosi" or "Enforcers" is underestimating their sophistication.. "Name one act of social hackery that does not involve computers" comes to mind.

In their defence, their role means that they "have no time to think" (answering a question of Feynman's). Hope you don't mind me calling this the "solvitur ambulando" market failure [compounded by [the promise of] "cheap" AI]. I hear they are now trying to make AI take walks (think of the auteur-inside-an-auteur from The Truman Show as a prototype of this "humanistic" strategy)..

Here's another redline I've been thinking about (between center left and center right.)

The center-left believes that the precautionary principle is general. (Including Taleb, who's been its foremost advocate!)

The center-right's social compact has major carve-outs for AI, programming, engineering, and whatever billionaires and their fans are invested in. Systemic Fraud Tolerance is downstream of these carveouts--- which could well be the parsimonious explanation for these diseconomies of scale.

From TFA: lobster.rs -> healthily AI-skeptic, center left. HN, that-whose-political-stance-must-not-be-named

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precautionary_principle

There's an odd one out, 3-D printing (replacing [trans]kepticism of biohacking). Seems like the people who want to regulate it tend to be center-right to right.

This threat of losing control of the means of production feels even more real than reproduction?

Tried but failed to be diagnosed with ADHD; more "success" with "general psychosis".

Ofc the "stims" were more revealing, in that I discovered a hard threshold past which I have to actively pay no mind to, eg, the concealed carry under every Patagonia fleece. (The cutlery did not self animate. What a letdown amirite.)

That training has continued to be helpful with suppressing "subclinical" paranoid ideation

In general the antipsychotics did nothing more than fog the brain

Edit: wow the burning crosses (or rather, cross-like-thingies) are not going to do well in the continental USA, the coastal bits at least

Trying to reword your joke to one more aligned with TFA's:

Tautologies are B&H because they confound intuition (H) AND are truthful (B)
NGL, I made use of following tautology

Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44477/ode-on-a-grecia...

Author in comments: Fair point. I suppose I decided to use the term tautology for the same reason I embrace "[liberalism=]neoliberalism", to defend a term that is often unfairly maligned.

Haha there is something right about Wukong being a great monkey who either shares his spoils with other monkeys or suffers alone, so that it's exactly the hubris I was accusing Mencius of.

Otoh there is the famous story of young Confucius getting "rejected" by Laozi.. (Sima Qian, Shiji)

..."I have heard that a shrewd merchant hides his wealth deeply, appearing as if he has nothing; a gentleman of abundant virtue keeps a demeanor that looks like foolishness."...

This way of avoiding (direct!) teaching & sharing sounds both more actionable and appealing to me :)

For Westerners, Court Jesters? Korean movie King's Man?

But like you, I habitually do the opposite..

The details could be painful but having a birds eye view is always possible?

And having a machine compress it for human consumption, sounds very plausible (and which I think of as engineering)

(The people here who reach for accusations of AI are saying they are not ready to learn, imho. Though your immediate preceding replies about Orwell flow less well than your usual writing?)

How would you judge the urge to teach people who have power or influence?

Your previous comments about Narcissism in Western economies come to mind.

It seems to me that Mencius was often talking down to his interlocutors. Maybe that would have worked out for him, but it didn't work out for many officials who got decapitated for speaking out. But am I an inferior person for thinking they weren't wrong not to control their urge to teach "tyrants"?

It seems that Stoics, Cynics etc escaped such punishment even though there were no equivalent advice in their worldview? Besides Socrates obviously. It could be that Westerners are simply better with manipulating emotions. And Socrates was complicated, but he'd never worm away from teaching.

I also think "hubris", a not very Asian concept, is something easier to address than narcissism (which has Asian versions).. maybe we can start there. (I am thinking of hubris in Greek stories or law, not the modern translation as "arrogance")

Consider Wu Kong. That's narcissism, not hubris, because he essentially had the powers of (most of) the gods. Whereas what Mencius had, and what the mods here have, could be called hubris. Hubris can be invisible to mortals, but not to gods. Hubris can be very abstract injuries to human dignity.

It feels like Orwell was being intimate with hubris. Big Brother. The Inner Party. And so on. Even "The Boot". Were carefully short of being "egoistic".

One caveat. It's very common in Chinese popculture to call someone competent a god, a goddess, almost always humourously. Interesting way to nip hubris in the bud?

Hubris is easier to correct than narcissism because sometimes all you have to do is point it out. Or wait for the AI bubble to pop.

Mencius would already have enjoyed his passive act of teaching before a bubble actually popped? Did he feel a need to buy puts?

I wanted to reply to your Baumol stuff proper but it took too long. I havent stuck the marketing copy so it will have for another time. (Quick and dirty slogan: Baumol is when linearizing the real economy of agents either as N 1<->1 or 1<->N interactions instead of N^2 --- as a high energy physicist would-- goes wrong)

Are those 20ml bottles? Here they can be gotten for cents. Essential oils are a big part of the Indian take on the Shenzhen mom-and-pop microfactories that directly preceded DJI. (& gave us those standard ultrasonic diffusers! ~2USD btw & we love the trade deficit)

I imagine the 5-person Indian oils businesses will be a skeleton for a nonChinese solar(-chem-)punk future..

Concentrated enough to be useful, impure enough to force robustness into the process design from the getgo.. but! far from the Baumol regime, if we don't have these MLMs..

(I meant, that it isn't worthwhile to train a new generation of Jony Ives on bottles or diffusers, but I will be happy to be wrong. Scentology remains a black magic)

Peering through my brain fog to read that (maybe you shouldn't give up writing about it either.) Here's what I can say right now.

Seems to be the difference between "innocent until proven guilty" and "guilty until proven innocent" and cringely's approach seems to be..

...

It seemed to me at first read to have been the former, but now that you put a spotlight on it, it doesn't seem so clear

Will sleep on it, but I don't think anthropomorphizing is the issue here, it's more about success probabilities/cost. Can a jury of MoEs decide whether one of their mates is guilty? Versus alternative jurisprudential arrangements.

That might or might not be the untimely "technicalities" that I was referring to, heh. It depends on whether anybody thinks that hallucinations are an inescapable consequence of sentience. I don't, but maybe it's just because I find hallucinations to be a stale take on the issue, a "red herring" for why Jensen has only emotional arguments against Dario.

Why does Jensen not invoke Huang's Law? It seems to be, not just a slamdunk approach to my Qs 3 and 4, but one morally (ahem!) superior to Dario's inconsistent marketing?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huang%27s_law

That is. The claim (which NVIDIA, --but not Anthropic-- seems well disposed to verify at their own leisure) that a "synergy between hardware, software, and artificial intelligence" exists.

Returning to that other thread: Animats would perhaps agree that in-face-explosions, brought about by this synergy, can only make NVIDIA stronger. (Legal threats alone seem to be already existential for Anthropic.) cringely should therefore inject much more than hallucinations into his setup.
