I’m not sure about this. It’s possible, but if google search hasn’t gotten worse, then the quality of competitor search has improved. I never imagined myself using Bing unironically, but I have consistently better results from Bing than google nowadays - which is inconvenient because I’m otherwise very plugged into the broader google ecosystem.

If anyone has tips for how they personally deal with this, I’d be grateful!

The drop-off in results has been extremely pronounced for me, both for text and image search. Queries that should easily generate dozens of pages instead result in 1-3. The results are rarely what I’m looking for. It’s slowly been driving me crazy.

At this point, l’ve switched to mostly using individual site’s search functionality (GitHub, Stack Overflow, etc or using site: ) and bookmarking/taking notes on anything more obscure. I’m at a point where I’m tempted to scrape and index my bookmarks so I can search locally. Link discovery is a different matter of course.

I had a brief true-crime phase when I was younger. It coexisted with a love of armchair adventure stories and disasters (a lot of Krakauer books). I was an anxious college kid and in my personal experience, true crime created a dopamine loop that directly fed off that anxiety. E.g. “here is a new danger you haven’t thought of” followed by an anxiety spike followed by learning the outcome of that situation and hypothetical actions I could take to mitigate harm, thus “solving” the anxiety.

I mistook desensitization to violence as empowerment.

Since then, I’ve completely soured on true crime or entertainment that hinge on death or extensive harm. While I’m sure careful storytelling can be done, the mass-produced content is often incredibly dehumanizing. My heart goes out to all the regular people whose worst days have been discussed with fervor online as though it were a tv show. Very black mirror.

I appreciate all of your comments in this thread. As a female researcher in graphics - there is an awkwardness to that image personally. But, I don’t speak for all women by any means.

It’s a small discomfort, nothing earth-shattering. I wouldn’t have made it very far in CS if I couldn’t handle it. But, it adds to the pile of other small discomforts of being a woman in CS/tech. And that pile is large and cumulatively results in a tense experience.

I’m more bothered by these responses than anything, bending-over-backwards to justify the necessity of the image. Come on, guys. Switching the image is a gesture, and a nice one. It’s not that hard to be considerate to your female colleagues. But, in many cases - most even, you don’t have to be if you don’t want to.
