You, I and everyone else and when enough people operate on highly likely’s, we stop being as interested in the why. For good reason, too. People like Musk will expect us to look at each action with a clean pair of eyes, and use it to stall or confuse the masses.
I’m sure lynch mentality is more involved and includes other motivations such as wanting to kill somebody. You’re taking things a bit too far.
Life is not just this or that. Life is also highly likely this or likely that. When you have a track record and make a lot of people have this image about you, many people will operate on highly likely’s or likely’s about you. Musk is no exception.
In the program where I did my Master’s, there was a professor who had a salary of 300K and didn’t seem to do anything exceptional compared to his peers. PhD students told me he had been the president of some unit at the university and when he stepped down, he didn’t let go of the money. This silly financial idiocy easily costs 3-4 grad student more to the university every year.
That’s what I’m doing in addition to a PhD. Even then, if my idea is really good, I know I’ll have to fight copyright trolls, or imitators, and the like. Life is a challenge man. All I want is to help people and make an impact but I find you need to be f-ing resilient.
I started my PhD last year and was interested in working with this PI in his lab. My bad maybe but I never contacted anyone in his lab about their experience.
When I got here I realized the members of the lab are almost all petite white women. A common reason why they’re doing their PhD in this lab? The PI saw something in them and thought they were special when they were undergraduates.
To top it off, most of them are doing projects predetermined by the PI for their dissertation.
Goes without saying, I intend to work with another professor but still very disheartening to see.
Would an antisocial design software for society in the first place? Obviously, he’s being hyperbolic. You might not be the one to read social cues. But don’t be too hard on yourself. It gets better with practice.
This article presupposes a healthy and functioning company. Leaders are more often than not blind to the realities of the company as they have control and feel they’re doing a great job.
A useful analogy is reading self-help books about communication while having a toxic family environment. Sure the advice is good but some of us know how useless it is if the environment is not right.
