Depends on your definition of "tracking users". Netflix tracks your viewing history to recommend new movies and TV shows. Amazon tracks your purchasing and browsing history to recommend items for you to purchase.

In my opinion, neither of these is inherently unethical.

Having never used myBalsamiq, I'm not sure what they built it in, but some of the tools you could use:

Flash, jQuery, ExtJS, HTML5

Isn't their desktop app built in Adobe Air? or have they moved away from that? I haven't used it in a while.

It is possible that you gave Google permission when you signed up.

I think it is more likely that the URL has all of the information Gilt needs to process the request:

    email_address=<any email would work here>

I visited that URL and replaced the original e-mail address with a different one and it worked fine.
