I grew up really poor and have had moderate success in the past few years. I try to keep myself motivated and learn new things and work on interesting projects, but every now and then I ask myself why. Why do I spend time working when it doesn't matter money-wise? When it gets like that, I just end up wasting the day playing games and regretting wasting the day... even though it doesn't matter.
I have managed to try and keep a similar lifestyle. I still live in a $800/mo apartment, but I like browsing $1mm+ houses and think about just buying one for an improvement in lifestyle.
