This is a bad assumption that any new competition would act differently than the status quo. More competitors would make it harder to have a solid argument of "pay me, or else", but that wouldn't stop some behind-the-scenes collusion.

A word of warning, there is plenty of google brain cancer in GWT, one of my personal favorites that elicited "wtf..."s frequently in a previous occupation:

Think about the absurdity of being sued for patent infringement if you were a pizza shop and your oven allegedly infringed on a troll patent. You didn't manufacturer the oven, why are you being sued?

The vendor's reputation is irreparably damaged by patent trolls who prey on customers due to the patent's apparent weakness. Sometimes corporations need justice too.
