This is how I got though college classes I found boring or tedious. I'd just stay up all night doing "interesting" things, then about 6am I would actually do the homework assignments, studying, etc I didn't want to do.
I'm sure it wasn't an effective strategy for information retention, and I developed pretty terrible sleep habits which plagued me for years after. But the homework got done...

I think something might be off in your mental model of python coroutines. They work via cooperative multitasking. Atomic operations aren't really necessary or relevant in such a system where you are in complete control of all yield points (i.e., calls to `await`).

Every time I find something that seems unnecessarily awk in asyncio, I eventually find out there's a good reason. But plenty of things that are written with it aren't using it exactly right.
The way I read this is that he simply encourages you to talk and share your thought process while solving the problem. If you are stuck, you will have to take hints anyway, but until then taking aloud helps the interviewer and might as well help you by forcing you to articulate your thoughts in a structured manner.
