That sort of pricing would make sense for a SaaS, but not sure for a service like mine.

> If someone can pay $1000 they can probably pay $1500 a month

I realize this is increasingly true as most of my customers are now actual startups (vs indie hackers in the early days)

It is in fact weighted toward the higher tier. However, I intentionally wanted to keep a reasonable gap between the two plans (< 30%) to not undervalue or overvalue one or the other.

PS: Happy to provide insights on how this model has been working for me

Thanks John, that makes quite a lot of sense actually. I guess I need to think about that more in-depth as I feel like I want both.

Grow my reputation so I can increase my rates over time.

Thanks! Mainly building in public + referrals from exiting clients.

My pleasure! That's a faire question that I get asked quite a lot ;) Here's the thing: requests are handled one at a time with an average turnaround time of 2 days or less. So until a requests has been completed (including revisions) you cannot move to the next one. This is basically how you would also work with an internal designer anyway, so nothing crazy, just a way to streamline things since I'm the only one doing all the design work.

As for your 2nd question, I actually have some of my clients that are agencies outsourcing their client work to me, which is fine. The same "1 request at a time" rule also applies in that case anyway. The only drawback for me then is that I cannot share the work publicly.

Thanks! In short, I'd say building in public on Twitter (https://twitter.com/JimDesignsCo) has been my primary way to get traction.

Yes, of course it is in a sense, but it's total revenue spread over 5 months, so just side income, which is pretty neat, don't get me wrong :)
