This is the most moronic thing I have heard on yc (today).
Why don't you hire us a babysitter too? Is this a website for you to get useful information and networking, or your own little kindergarden, where you have to manage other peoples time? Does having millions of dollars not give you enough opportunities to control other peoples lives?
Hire a hooker and leave us out of your creepy desire to control other people and what they do with there time. I can manage my own time.
You need to talk to a lawyer and protect your interests.
If you are sophisticated, you could concurrently make sure the info leaks everywhere. Get an anonymous friend to go to a computer workspace at a library (preferably in another geographic area, and not leaving a record of the communication) and cut and paste it to wikileaks and anyone who would spread it. Information needs to be free, and you have the power to make it free anonymously, and the ethical obligation to destabilize established powers.
But as for your site, martyrs are useless, protect your interests. You do not want to be involved in a lawsuit with apple, even if you win a few months later. For an individual, being on the winning side of a court battle with apples money and lawyers is still losing proposition. For your ethics, anonymously get someone else to leak the content, and smoke a bowl and smile when you send apple a letter that says of course you'll comply, you are sorry, you love your 4 macs, and could they send you a signed picture of Steve Jobs, again you are sorry, and complied just as soon as you stopped crying for possibly upsetting steve jobs.
In football, this is called punting, and you do it because if you play, worse things could happen that aren't worth risking.
I agree with dhuck, don't you guys know that being a hacker in the countercultural and sci fi sense is all about sounding like you are surronded by 70 year old lutheran women at church. I read in neuromancer about how that cyberpunk guy was always like "tone it down for the communities sake man."
I think if this comment offended you, you should get the fuck off of hacker news. You are polluting an important and necessary countercultural concept with your bullshit morality. If you want it to be all prim and proper, call it "hierarchically organized entrepreneurial news related to information economies for boring professionals who take themselves too seriously" and leave my cherished countercultural concepts out of it. I'm constantly amazed how many people in here are stuck in old paradigms. This site is branded hacker news, not lutheran technology update.
When you treat people like shit forever, they are going to strike back blindly sooner or later.
And like always, the people who deserve to die make profits from the wars (on both sides) that followed, and thousands of innocent peoples die on both sides. I think they should hang Dick Cheney and Osama Bin Laden on the same gallows at the same time.
I do want prosecution of egging someone on who is suicidal. Suicide is a medical emergency like a heart attack. Inducing a heart attack in a person with poison and inducing a suicide in a person with words are the same to me.
Incitement to commit suicide should be the same as incitement to commit murder.
I was going to post about how I thought it's not bad when people commit suicide, because life is just a ride we are all on. I was gonna put a link to this youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZkhR8suCF4 Then I saw your comment. And I realized I might sound like you did. So I changed my mind.
I did work with hospice patients before I die. Everyone thinks my attitude about death is callous except for the people I was helping to feel better as they were dying. They appreciated it, and hence liked me. But sometimes saying "It's OK that people die" isn't what family wants to hear. I seem callous, put the clients appreciate someone who doesn't treat them special because they will die soon (that makes them feel already dead and like they are defined by their dying.)
You are not apologizing for your joke. If humanity was more evolved, you wouldn't feel like you had to apologize for anything except a really lame joke. You are apologizing because most people are so deluded they are all afraid of dying and you did not give the people's fear of dying the superstitious awe they demand. And because most people are so insistent on enforcing their superstitions on everyone else that your lame joke threatens your business partners. You are saying: "I'm sorry I didn't adequately say what the consensus reality demanded of me." The next step for you (besides getting much better jokes) is to learn how to manipulate people's perceptions in consensus reality to control them instead of just confronting tranced people with reality accidently. Further, any publicity is good publicity. Apology not needed or accepted.
You should of seen me after Tim Russert died. I was gleeful. People die every day. If you're anxious about that, you can't live your own life. Fear of death is one of the main reasons people unknowingly live lives of quiet desperation. Using humor defeats the fear.
I disagree with this article. I think that primates who would stay in shitty conditions while other people get to hoard the bananas they work hard for are the ones you shouldn't trust to do anything requiring intelligence. These primates are confused, and call it loyalty. Loyalty is one way dominators control the dominated without sharing the bananas the dominated produce. I don't want monkey's who would stay at work because of loyalty (like some egg factory chicken that won't walk out it's cage when you open the door) working for me.
The people who leave a shitty condition because there are better conditions, and they don't see their bosses as better then them, are the ones who have the glint of intelligence and self respect to be worth hiring. They r the 1s that will call you a fucktard when you are being fucktarded (which is good if u r not an egotistical ass). The trick is to treat people well, share your bananas, and encourage them to treat you like an equal instead of a superior, and then they won't leave you for a competitor since you are the best to work for. Of course you should hire your competitors employees. The ones that will leave because it's in their interest are the ones that haven't been completely robotized by a worldview that keeps them stupid and miserable while other people hoard the bananas they produced.
U don't see many googlers lining up outside of yahoo. Another word for loyal yahoo team member is 'sucker'. This turncoat advice only applies if u r the shittiest to work for. U should aspire to be so much better then ur competitors that u r hiring all the turncoats, in which case the advice in this link does not apply.
No. Mitt Romney is a spineless, shifty fuck who failed at tricking enough republican morons into voting for him against their own economic interests. He has no principles (at all) and would happily say any thing to any audience if his pollsters said it would play. The game he was playing wasn't 'tell people what you think' but 'use 100 years of branding and mass psychology to trick people and you can have the power to do whatever you want regardless of what you said.' I'll say it again. Fuck Mitt Romney.
It's important to keep this in it's proper perspective. Mitt Romney is a successful businessman. So we should listen to what he says on the US economy. That's like saying my obsessive compulsive butcher (kill kill kill kill kill cut cut cut cut cut) is good with animals so I should let him watch my pets. Fuck Mitt Romney.
I'm disappointed by this thread. I thought the people here were smarter then this. When you listen to Mitt Romney, you are listening to a sociopathic bedwetter in magic underwear who will say anything to get power, and then feel like he can do whatever he wants with his power for winning the game of tricking the most idiots, and that anything he does that hurts people is OK because God wanted him to have power.
"Advice should focus on helping you weigh those tradeoffs intelligently rather than dictating absolutes."
is the best thing I remember reading on YC. I've read books that were less profound then that sentence. I always thought that, but as a newbie inventor/entrepreneur, it's good to have put so succinctly and up front.
but open source cannot compete with apple. That is like saying an army with no generals, navy, air force or money will beat an army with a great general with stealth bombers, battleships, and a building filled with hundred dollar bills and gold bars. Just not gonna happen.
You are said Eliezer Yudkowsky? Nice. I read and like that overcoming bias stuff. If anyone could prove me wrong about the singularity, it's gonna be young people working on their own like you. We need lots more people working on there own chasing there own ideas. I like your style.
I bet you find lots of useful stuff trying for it. It still seems to me to be more a religious then scientific endeavor, but I'm glad you are working to prove loudmouths like me wrong.
You are thinking days and weeks ahead instead of months and decades. I agree the app store as it stands is crap. I think the ship has sailed on the app store being crap. That's a short term, soluble problem. Long term, UI + neurology will determine the 21st century we are headed for.
All the other corporations suck at integrating UI and the brain.
Watching people talk about the technology game as if what's happening right now (i.e. last years decisions) matters on a larger scale is like watching kindergardeners play soccer by mobbing the ball. While you're talking about HTMML in the app store, they're thinking about 2010, 2020.
If the printing press was just invented, you'd be saying monks had been copying books by hand forever, and were more open then the printing press.
