Tesla hasn't proved that you can make a reasonable amount of profit compared to your investment when selling to that market. Hell, they haven't showed you can make any profit on that investment, they're still deep in the red. It would take them something like 10+ more years at their current income to even break even. Is it really such a surprise that companies that need to make money aren't dying to get into that market?

Well first, you don't seem to understand how herd immunity works. That 70% you quote is only a useful number when there isn't an active epidemic. With an active epidemic you get significant overshoot.

If we dropped all mitigation efforts, you should expect this to infect something like 95+% of people before effectively dying out. The amount of overshoot is going to depend on how widespread the infection is.

Second, you can develop immunity without the bad effects of actually getting the disease (ya know, like a fucking vaccine). Saying that we need xx% of people to develop immunity doesn't mean that we need xx% of people to get this deadly disease.

That herd immunity equation is really only useful in the context of vaccination when there's no active epidemic.

With an active scenario like this, it's just the point where the number of people infected per day stops going up. You still end up with like 90%+ of people getting sick before it finally peters out.

The paper assumes that you have a good amount of related context. I'd recommend at least reading the Slicer paper mentioned several times (https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/osdi16/osdi16...).

I agree. It's also why I can't understand people who root against Theranos. I, for one, am on the side of health.
