This is a common misperception about AI and ML. Most leading voices in ML will tell you that--unless you have a very good reason to believe differently--ML is not the tool to turn to if you need better than human accuracy. That also comports with my experience in the field over the last 6 years.

Always makes me laugh. Perhaps something like 10% clueless, 80% disingenuous and 10% feel they are somehow entitled to information that's obviously sensitive or private.

Probably just people blowing off steam and the target de jour are data scientists. If people had to sit down with their company's data scientists to air their grievances face to face I doubt they would be so condescending.

I got a chance to start using F# for the first time for some cryptography course assignments and supremely enjoyed it. Having a language that's easy to script with, has access to .Net libraries for everything and is easy to run on any major OS is kinda great.

These NYT pieces are some real cringe porn. Although I give the writer props for admitting that The West Wing sucks.

C'mon man. I have firsthand knowledge of an editor asking a contributor to remove mentioning Amazon in a story because it cast the company in a negative light.

This is not a good example of where Monte Carlo methods are needed because solving this problem with Betas can be achieved by summation over the joint posterior where P(A) > P(B).

Every now and then the stench of Ross's writing wafts up unexpectedly into your day. At this point it's a pleasure because Ross gets it so wrong you remain in awe of how warped his mind has become. Even a fool can tell you America is in decline, but only a special fool--"doofus" is really the best word--will try to sell it to you the way Ross does:

“The sexual revolution created new winners and losers, new hierarchies to replace the old ones, privileging the beautiful and rich and socially adept in new ways and relegating others to new forms of loneliness and frustration.”

Of course there's a perfectly reasonable materialist explanation for the miseries Ross and his ilk enumerate upon, but it's for their total mischaracterization of the obvious that institutions like the New York Times pay them handsomely.
