If you want to know why, look at the twitter replies. She's being regarded as a Brave Hero of the movement. Bad for a technical employee. Good for a highly visible position, like startup founder, developer evangelist, head of a female programmer outreach program or anything marketing related.

This situation has nothing to do with technology. It's not some passive "I won't listen to this guy because he disagrees with me" stance. People are going out of their way to make sure people who have political opinions they disagree with can't work. All three of my examples show this. And there are many, many more examples. Academia and public education are two, just off the top of my head.

It started with conservative christians. Now that the most undesirable element is gone, the purges have expanded to anybody who isn't as extreme as the loudest member. As time goes on, the required politics have gotten more and more extreme. There's no evidence of this trend slowing down or stopping.

Motorcycles are a delicious exception to these rules, especially in areas where lane splitting is legal. Or at least unenforceable.

And Brendan Eich gave $1000 to an organization people don't approve of. A guy made a joke at a convention about dongles and got fired. A whole lot of Sci-Fi authors were prevented from publishing at Tor because they identify themselves as politically conservative.

This particular pattern has been growing over the last decade or two. The politics in question are growing more extreme and the required level of political correctness demanded is also getting more extreme. One exception does not disprove the pattern.

Don't fool yourself: they're both corporations and thus money making entities. Clearly, the difference is minor at best, since this behavior is spreading beyond the community based organizations.

Bingo Card Creator and Appointment Reminder. The latter is big enough he's started doing angel investing. Keep in mind, he runs both of them by himself and he no longer consults. I'm not saying he doesn't have an ulterior motive, but his motives are considerably more pure than 99% of the articles on hacker news.

Not that it matters. Who cares where the advice comes from if it works? And if it doesn't work, the purest motives in the world isn't going to make it work.

Many thanks for the response. It's also what I observe other mobile-centric people around me do. They don't spend a ton of time in the browser, but they do use it. It's encouraging, in a way. Sort of like a slow computing movement.

I know of an American manufacturing company that makes electric motors of all shapes and sizes. It's been steadily growing for a few years and now grosses 5+ million a year. Despite their profits steady increase, they remain at 49 employees. Apropos of nothing, their profits have started to level off.

Take a look at John Cleese's talk about creativity[0]. I personally buy into the whole concept of there being an open mode and a closed mode and you can't be in both at the same time. My coding tends to run in cycles. When I'm trying to figure out a problem or structure an area of code, I'm in the open mode and I experiment a lot. What I don't do is commit a lot of code during that period. After everything is nailed down and I have a game plan, I switch to the closed mode. That's when I code around the clock and bust my ass. But that lasts a day or two, max.

Maybe it should be work smarter, then harder, then repeat?
