I very much like to see this type of pseudo-science on HN. I read the article a few weeks ago and was pretty iffy about it, but I didn't really have a venue to converse about it. The comments that are already here, yours included, have got some cogs turning in my brain and I see some good thought and discussion to be had about the article.
It's entirely possible that I'm being biased as an American, but I've never really felt this way. I love public transportation whenever I'm in cities like Chicago or New York City. My issue is that my state (and sometimes my commute) is bigger than most European countries. I've never felt a deep cultural barrier between public transportation and me, it's personally just incredibly inconvenient. I would very much love to see more public transportation options in America, though. But your argument is quite interesting, so thanks!
Hah, that sounds really, really painful. Wouldn't you take to finding a way to compiling it yourself or committing a Formula for it instead of installing MacPorts? But if a VM works, don't fix what isn't broken, I guess. (Biochemistry is my day job, so forgive me if I'm missing an obvious detail of full-time development).
I find it very mildly ironic that the author is comparing these "ancient" versions to MacPorts. Am I naïve, or do the overwhelming majority of OS X developers use Homebrew nowadays? I've always thought Homebrew to be much more robust than MacPorts. However, I've never actually used MacPorts heavily (and probably never will).
Can anyone clue me in as to why (ex-)soviet regions have such an adamant opposition to anything other than heterosexuality?
I'm an odd case I guess since I'm an American who is both gay and deeply interested in "all things" Russian. (My boyfriend is even more so since he's currently studying in Rostov).
I had the opportunity to visit Tallinn and St. Petersburg (along with Helsinki and Stockholm) last year and the perceivable difference in atmospheres was quite significant between cities.
I suppose it's difficult to describe, but the western cities (like Tallinn) felt so much more easy-going and "happy" compared to St. Petersburg (even though every Russian I conversed with was deeply proud of their city).
I'm sure I subconsciously projected my own biases onto the cities before I visited them, but I also feel as if there's objective credibility to what I observed (i.e. that you can "get a solid feel/understanding" of the city just by being there).
I just don't know why eastern countries like Russia have always felt so hostile towards same-sex individuals.
I agree. Regardless of one's stance on drugs and their respective online black markets (the latter of which I had a sizable knowledge), I don't really see what Shrem's expected outcome of this could have been other than, well, what happened.
I appear to be the only one who thinks it looks like an "A". The loop reminds me of something an airplane would do in the air. I can see the sexual resemblance, but only if I concentrate hard enough on it, then it just goes back to being an "A".

Please cite this extensively. Many bioactive molecules are fat-soluble. Just because a substance is fat-soluble doesn't mean it can be stored indefinitely and readily metabolized.

I disagree with you 100% here. I can tell when someone is stoned, regardless of physical side-effects, changes in mentality or demeanor, etc.
Regardless, in my opinion, your argument crumbles if we clarify stoned to be under the influence of well-concealed alcohol, benzodiazepines, opiates, barbiturates, excessive stimulants, or, hell, maybe even ketamine, methaqualone, etc.
I (unfortunately, I suppose) have had experiences with pretty much every drug and RC under the sun, and I personally think it's very easy to detect when someone is under the influence of marijuana compared to any of the substances thereof (well, maybe except the dissociatives or excessive alcohol).
