HAL is personlly my current favourite, it seems to add the minimal overhead on top of JSON whilst adding in links.

I fully agree. JSON-LD requires first some kind of idea about RDFa which I didn't even know was a thing until reading up on JSON-LD.

Layers of REST that people get to:

1. GET is good for everything

2. Perhaps we should use POST too

3. Let's use all the verbs

4. Someone mentions HATEOAS

5. Some old guy says that you've got to use XML because that defines links and JSON doesn't

6. Someone else counters with JSON-LD and sends a link to the W3 spec

That's as far as I got. Mostly this conversation happens in my head.

Personally I think this is fine. If paying for their content encouages them to maintain a quality RSS feed and not track you that seems like a reasonable exchange.

I can imagine a subscription service where you could pay to access a bunch of RSS feeds.

The fundamental problem is that people are used to not paying for content. But one of the things that has changed over the twenty years that the article talks about is that people are more willing to pay for things on the internet.

For me it's the opposite. There are decent replacements for all of Google's services. I can do this on my own and it's my choice.

With Facebook there simply isn't a replacement that has all my family and friends. There's no way I'll convince them to use something else.
