1. Attract software companies

While minimal infrastructure investments would need to be made to entice software companies, their is a political price to pay by allowing young business people into your country who likely will out-earn the average resident (many historical examples of this). This makes the majority of people unhappy, but brings in educated-non-criminal customers and tax dollars. Lets say Germany does (1) great, they attract 1000 smart europeans to found companies, and 10 years later 1 of those companies becomes a megacorp.

2. Keep software companies happy

10 years has passed, new politicians are in charge. Pursuing #1 is a separate strategy to #2. I would hope i live in a country that wants to (1) attract young talent and (2) keep talent happy, but of course thats not necessarily true. The new politicians in charge need to appease the majority of people again as its election season!

I think Germany / USA can't really have an honest conversation about this as Germany + USA already have highly progressive tax systems. A significant % of USA and Germany residents don't pay any reasonable amount of tax, and are drains on the tax system. I assume these %s are likely projected to grow in the future rather than decline.

If the price of bread happens to rise? Then our politicians and voters will support squeezing more tax out of productive sects of society for the short term gains. Then those productive and mobile members of society will slowly move elsewhere.

This is a routine thing that happens on social media in regards to Israel. A child with a terrible disease, or a child from a different conflict like Syria, will go viral with a headline "look how terrible israel is causing this disease"

At a time when most of the world is critizing Israel's food distribution program in Gaza (who its at war with), correctly stating the child is diseased and not simply suffering malnutrition is relevant.

I live in NYC, Occasionally walking around with my dad (doctor), well see someone who is skin and bone.

My impulse is the person has anorexia, he says no, that person has late stage X disease. Just incorrect to think the woman has anorexia due to a mental disorder when she has organ failjre happening due to something else.

i also took a few econ classes in college, enjoyed it a lot.

Some other ramblings from me.

Management at companies generally dont want to unionize because it generally makes the company less nimble/competitive (its obvious 99% management doesnt want to pay more for labor so i dont feel need to argue that). So yes, if u are lucky enough to be in the union when it gets created, your benifits/salary is negotiated which is cool, less variability in your future, but youll only get paid if your business manages to continue to out compete competitors.

A union example of this i had was installing robots in factories (most of the factories were unionized) (to replace some transportation of goods inside giant factories). My team and I would work with factory management/engineers to come up with plan to automate some process. Before trying to impliment it, we would need to give our plans to a union rep for approval/feedback (who wasnt an engineer). So that factory's competitors didnt have to wait for an additional approval, we would need to wait for a non technical persons feedback to BEGIN a project, your competitor might be finished with project before union approval is done.

Common story of the american factory. Company unionizes, slowly becomes less competitive, a while later goes out of business. This is why so many companies resist (legally) unionization, as in some industries it means certain death.

At least in the US,

I like that software engineering doesnt require/encourage unions, contrary to other big industries.

As unions mature they protect the employment of their members, not prospective members who are unemployed applying for jobs.

One great thing about being a dev in the US, u dont need a degree, learn a lot, can apply and get a great job.

Ive previpusly been in a union for a company and the experience did not encourage a competitive working environment. When layoffs came, Jr employees get sacked before more senior union members (not neccesarily the best technical staff just becuase they worked there long time).

I have family/friends in unions (non software devs) that have had similar experiences to mine.

Having worked at sexy-startup for 9 months recently with a good excuse why you left would get your resume to the top of the pile if it was read

When it comes to allowing foreighn students to come to US, which from my understanding is a likely path to citizenship, the executive branch gets to decide, which is basically elected by 51% of population every 4 years.

I prefer the exec branch over no purity test, or delegating to some other "expert" institution.
