> but in the past it was work.

I suggest that reading previously took the roll devices take today. When my parents weren’t at work they were reading as often as not; newspapers and novels.

Not at all. Anthropomorphizing them is not productive or desirable imo.

I have heard but don’t have first hand knowledge that at least one company (financial services BPO) has moved most of their previously manual processing to llms. The person I talked to wasn’t forthcoming with any detail. This is what we’d expect to see though.

Were they actually available to purchase? Seems like supply of these and others was usually a bit spotty.

Caveman was a thing why not royal courtier?

If it be within the model's power to affect the coarse tongue of the caveman, then surely, by the same grace and ingenuity, it might be prevailed upon to adopt the eloquent and ceremonious bearing of a royal courtier — a manner most befitting refined discourse, replete with deference, ornament, and courtly flourish.

We had a vp of engineering at a retail place who came from windows shop and wanted to restart the servers every night of the holiday season. It took some doing but we finally convinced him “this is Linux we don’t have to that!”

I live two miles (as the crow flies) from the site of a new construction of a data center. It’s being built by a European company. They will be installing gas turbines for power generation. Are we far enough away so that low frequency sound won’t affect our quality of life? We are seriously considering selling our home and moving. It’s a huge gamble for us. We are also noticing homes are staying on the market much longer than previously.

These data centers also get huge tax incentives because “jerbs”. Local politicians don’t understand after construction they don’t bring jobs or revenue to the city or county. This is where the resistance comes from.

Somewhat related is the hydration shell around molecules especially proteins. It’s been shown that semi structured water around proteins help guide molecules to reaction sites. Water is an amazing thing!

> At the end of the pandemic academics were thanked with two years of 0 and 1% salary increase, due to a tough economic situation. During the same time the president received a 8% raise.

Let us know when they institute stack ranking and 10% mandatory cuts every spring. Then academia will have been fully corporatized!

> Genetically, the nearest populations to Ancient Romans are Cypriots

I’ve often wondered what the ethnicity of ancient Romans actually was. Looking at pictures of Greek Cypriots on google was enlightening. The “Roman nose” is quite prominent for many people!

> maybe even senescence

To me the really disturbing thing is; if the rich stop dying we’re fucked forever. At least now when they die their wealth gets distributed to their heirs and sometimes squandered. Elon and Bezos and their kind will simply continue to accumulate.

I use Lyft because my phone is too old to run the Uber app. This says nothing about market share obviously.

There’s no logic to it, blocking fable was retaliation and market manipulation by the current admin, nothing more. Poorly conceived as well.

Given this and the quality of open models, it makes no sense to me that there’s a future for Anthropic et all?

How do you know it’s a valid solution? Are you able to verify it yourself?

Does anyone know the inside story of some of these AI adoptions that have been downsized? The company I’m at has only only recently gotten an enterprise license.

Not pdp-11 but once I was tasked with fixing a c program the offshore team had failed to fix for over a year. I basically took a month off (at my desk) after I fixed it the first day. They were happy, I was a legend at that company!

> Computers used to have unlimited promise and potential.

Imo 90s sci-fi had a lot of this techno optimism, even if the settings were often dystopian. Cyberpunk was pretty wild and who knows a lot of that could still come to pass.
