The problem today it's hard to convince even myself to pay the storage premium, but I 100% agree with you.

I'm curious what would take for regular people (i.e. people off HN) to realize what is pointed in the article is a real problem.

In my experience, every time I mention this I'm labeled as: nostalgic old guy, Don Quixote wannabe, tinfoil hat supporter, pirate nerd who doesn't understand people just want convenience. I've seen people bit by losing access to purchased content shrug and say "yeah, that's bad isn't it? at least I was able to watch it before they removed it".

Sometimes I feel that's a lost battle. People were put to boil just like the frog in the anecdote and keep swearing it's a hot bath.

Back in 2000 I was being interviewed for my first internship, to join a team of C programmers. They showed me one of the winner entries of the prior years, asked me to review the code and left the room. About 5 minutes later they came back:

– And?

– I'm sorry I wasted your time. I just can't understand it.

They burst into laughs and asked me to start the joining process.

I wonder if people still make fun of interns. I still have a good laugh when I remember myself freaking out.

Such as Google Wave? I really wanted it to work.

This is a very good comparison, I'll be using it.

It just made me realize why I don't have those found memories of my mom's cooking. When we got our first microwave she went full on the vibe cooking and took years to realize how dumb it was.

I hope my kid doesn't get the same kind of memories about my weekend projects.

I don't need this to know what wakes me up during the night: my wife pushes the door and THEN turns the doorknob. A simple conversation was no good. My MIL said on her experience deep conversations would not help either. At least it didn't help for 15 years.

You're joking, but the other night I had high fever and had nightmares of AI giving me wrong answers to questions I already knew the answer, but for some reason I kept insisting on writing the same prompts I didn't even needed over and over again.

He didn't receive the memo because someone wrote DECEASED on his mail months ago.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but Apple's parental controls just don't work.

The default Debian version is focused on stability, so you'll only find battle-tested releases in it. That's why it's called "stable", if you're feeling more adventurous than that, you could try "testing" or even "unstable". 20+ years ago I daily drived an unstable desktop. At that time it had literally what was released hours ago, but you were always risking it to stop working after any update. You should check these versions if you like Debian.

Coincidentally, I'm reading this at the doctor's office reception, waiting to check my (potentially genetic) hearing loss. Hope it's something simpler, but good to know there are advances in this area.

Brazilian here. It's not a superstition, I can see my wife's belly literally inflate if the process is not done correctly. I cook beans at least once a week, I've made mistakes and there's no way to hide it. We don't get them cooked from delivery as we don't know how they were prepared, lesson also learned the hard way.

That said, the process is soaking the beans in water for, at least, 10 hours. You have to change the water four or five times during this period and toss the water at the end.

On the other hand, adding bay leaves are totally a superstition. Saw my mother-in-law trying to hide she forgot to soak the beans overnight by adding bay leaves and my wife had a bad aftermath.

It took me forever to upgrade because I was afraid the same thing would happen to me. Luckily it didn't, but I can imagine the frustration.

At least once a week I ask Claude what to cook with the last ingredients from my last trip to the groceries. I'm still to be disappointed by the results, although every time one of the three or four of its suggestions seems completely off my taste.

It depends on what you call "non-trivial". I found answers on how to circumvent dumb macos bugs on Apple forums at least twice in the last 6 months. One related to displays, I was about to return a new USB-C monitor which wouldn't turn on. A silly issue, but it's a bug on my book, I wouldn't find the answer on the docs.

Same here. It's getting quite common for me.

"a better home": probably someone who also thinks it's cool and also will never use it :)

Yep. After years of frustration, trying every possible way to fix it, uncountable hours of searching, I asked Claude about it: "just subscribe to an external service". This is ridiculous, Android's parental controls work flawlessly. If I knew that beforehand, I would never had got my kid an iOS device.
