Yes; I have a friend who is part of a small team that wrote a very successful stock market trading gateway in Java. Turns out the JVM's GC can be tuned in very specific ways based on your needs. And there are ways to avoid having to do JVM GC in critical areas of the code as well.

The 12-14 days is crucial here, I think: The US Army tested battle readiness and effectiveness off and on since WWII and found that you can keep a unit working well for a couple of weeks with about 4.5 hours a night. After that, they start to have serious problems. Less than 4.5 hours a night and the problems start a lot sooner.

I thought Tyson's COSMOS was really well done but doesn't hit its stride until the 4th episode or so. I loved it almost as much as Sagan's COSMOS. The only "problem" with it was that the original was so good, and such a first of its kind, it's virtually impossible to top. I think Tyson's version was as good as it could be.

yeah not a great timeline comparison, but the idea is a Nx growth translates to Nx return on investment at some point.

This idea is key, regardless of what the dictionary definition of startup is. A startup cannot merely be a profitable business. If that were true many more startups would be still running today. But if you take investment of 10 million and you're positive cashflow of, say, 200,000 in your first year with a projection of 1 million / yr in 10 years, you will be shut down and sold off: Investors want AT LEAST a 2x return in that same timeframe otherwise it isn't worth it.
