Does anyone know if there has been a case between the IRS and a person in tax debt trying to travel? Be great to see where that goes and how it's challenged.
The DSL provider in my area sets up customer's wireless networks with their home or mobile phone number as the password. If you know that number or can look it up in public records then you're in. If you can't find it maybe use a dictionary pertaining to the area code of phone numbers and then you're in. When the protocol changes to something more secure, the ISP's customer will still be as insecure as they always were.
I like the idea of shipping your devices, but what if you need your device during the trip up to customs? One thought comes to mind is ship a one-time passcode to your final destination and only that can unlock it at customs? It may appear you are actively hiding something from them and you end up in a lot of trouble. Or during the questioning, you don't hide anything and provide the address the one-time passcode is stored, which will use up valuable resources to go retrieve it. Maybe that would be too much trouble for them and let you go or you just added 8 more hours and expenses you have to pay to retrieve it.
If the laptop is not in your possession when it has to clear customs wouldn't this mean they cannot ask you for the password and such, then this would limit what they could do? Though they could still seize it, but at least without the knowledge of passwords and social media.
I agree, Upstart was great for most things and was simple to understand. Though I ran into some difficult fork, exec issues for certain processes. I sometimes had to run a wrapper to use upstart, but those seemed to be edge cases.
I'd prefer if we stuck with Upstart and improved on it, though it already seems like a distant dream.
