Microsoft used to have "Microsoft Train Simulator". It was being shown off at E3 in 2001 in a dark little corner, by this older gentlemen who for I know may have been the producer or main developer.

I'm not into trains, but I felt bad for this guy so I spent 15 minutes at his booth and let him show me everything. It seemed to have made his day.

The article mentions Sheriff, which you don't hear about very often. It's a really neat take on Space Invaders, kind of a hybrid of that and Robotron.

I have attempted to play Doom 3 on three separate occasions in my life, and each time I gave up before ever having a chance to fire a weapon.

The photo in the article looks like AI slop but isn't - it was taken in 2019. It took me awhile to convince myself everything in it was real.

I started feeling like a factory worker well before LLMs. My reputation and network stopped mattering and it all came down to take this assessment and do this Leetcode to prove you are a good enough replaceable cog. I have about 15 more years before retirement and I doubt there is anything left to look forward to in my career.

If you tell me I have "Unlimited" PTO, I'm taking 5 weeks, because that's what I've had at every regular PTO job in the last 20 years.

I suppose you have to look at it as this person is just unwilling or unable to operate in a different way at this price point, and if you want a new beam spring keyboard, right now there is no competitor.

I'm pushing 50 now and I hit the wall almost 10 years ago. No real raises, new opportunities pay less. Inflation has been ratcheting down on me constantly, and my family has to make continual changes to stay in the black.

ALDI is great though!

The Slirp backend for the NE2000 networking driver is the big one for me.

It's just not as good as a notebook. I've tried to make it as good. It sleeps, there's too much fumbling around with it to get to what you want. You lose the muscle memory of where something is in the book, you can't quickly flip to anything. You notice you used to do certain things, like flip to two different pages at once. Everything is just immediate and tactile.

You don't want to pass an interview like that.

How do you convince people to not want an instant answer? Even if SO didn’t result in so many “What have you tried?” responses and immediate closures, most people would still prefer instant feedback.

The 980 was used as the CPU in the Evans and Sutherland Novoview graphics system, part of a flight simulator.

Definitely possible, I lost my sense of smell completely for a couple of months over a decade ago after a minor cold. Completely gone, could not even smell gasoline. It was pretty upsetting. One day it was a faint scent of peanut butter that came back, and a few days later it recovered completely.

All I know is I’m glad I don’t live in the world where this kind of reasoning dominates. All the greatest things I’ve seen in my life have been arguably pointless in this way.

When did admissions start being referred to as the "talent pipeline"?

I never understood why they haven't had a team implementing simple features like that for over a decade. It's not even AI. Have a dashboard of the most commonly tried things every day, and develop the features.

That was the very same reaction of many early S-100 computer owners. This emulator has done a good job emulating that.
