OP here. I see where you're coming from and I even agree with you. I seek and like tech posts on HN.

That being said, I enjoy reading (and writing) human stories as well! Plus, it's nice to read the many stories people are sharing in the comments of this post. It shows that our community isn't as cold/ruthless as some may think :)

old school, but good. :) I remember enjoying reading this tremendously when it was released.

I've never seen anything like this article. True, simple art. Really well executed.

I can't say that I agree fully with it, but knowing the virtues you want to abide to is a good idea.

Interesting take. Though, at the end of the day, it feels a bit like teaching to cheat.

you're not alone my friend. That's why I think it's so important to teach it to our kids.

It can be done as an adult as well, but it requires more work!

You’re too kind! Thank you for saying so, it means a lot.

Just because you say "People are machines though" without blinking, doesn't make it true :-) Dogs rule; but yeah they aren't people.

Awesome to hear. I remember reading something a while back, saying that toddlers were developing language much slower when people use their phones around them. Because toddlers need a lot of interactions.

Goes without saying, yet worth pointing out.

It is a skill, for sure. I still feel like I suck at it in many ways. But recognizing it is the first step to doing better. And pausing what you're doing when someone talks to you is a relatively easy thing to do.

OP here, I agree with you. Though what I wrote doesn't contradict this; consider that the smartest is the person who knows how to play corporate politics.

I like Bishop Barron's definition (inspired by Saint Thomas Aquinas): "Love is willing the good of the other as other"
pmzy

Do you mean as in "You shall love your neighbor as yourself"?

I think the quote underline that if ethics isn't taught prior tech knowledge, it's unlikely to be given any importance later on. I don't take it to say that one can't value both.

the essay is about intelligence, something we value in others. While pride is when we value our own intelligence.

I agree with you that pride is a big issue (it is, after all, a capital sin).
pmzy

yes, that. And how we often mess up the order; ethics should come first. I'd pin this comment if I could :)
