Came here to say this too. KiCAD has come a LONG way in the last couple years. It’s suitable for professional work and a no brainer for open source hardware.
Who is going to drop $4k/year for an Altium license to contribute to your open source project?!
I think a lot of internet connected hardware is sold cheaper than it would be otherwise just so they can get some consumer data harvesting software into your life.
ie, that laptop would be more expensive without the junky pre-installed software.
Nothing new, and still a shame they don’t let consumers know what’s going on. It’s even more of a shame when expensive things do it too —- like cars.
