For PhD and masters level, everything is in English except maybe some specific civil engineering courses about regulations. Also, I believe that for CS, everything is in English starting from Bachelors, with lectures in English and small problem classes being held either in German or English (you can choose).

I can totally relate to the piece about it being a kick in the ass to pull myself together. I also got into the PhD partially to prove that I am smart enough. I think I needed to play that pattern out one way or another, it was something that would have come out in other ways in a different situation. But I did learn something about myself by confronting this issue so directly in the PhD, even though it’s difficult to articulate what exactly I got out of it.

Actually I came around to the point of view that most people get into the PhD for “the wrong reasons”, but that the process of being confronted with those wrong reasons helps you grow. Similar to “nobody is ready for marriage, marriage makes you ready for marriage.”

I have a Computer Science PhD and am an EU national. I would like to work in the US but am worried about being tied to a specific employer on a visa, but I don’t understand if this is just something I would have to accept. Is there a resource you can recommend that would clearly explain the options available to me? Additionally I don’t understand whether I would be subject to a lottery or whether with a PhD it is almost a sure thing to be able to get a work visa. Thank you so much.
