Physical disks were one of the last differentiators that consoles had. 20 years ago, you could buy a game, take it home, put it into the console, and begin playing straightaway. Now it has to be installed first to storage, which of course the console has a finite amount of and will cost you more money to expand it. There's also been a complete shift from local multiplayer and dedicated servers/server browsers to gating online play behind subscriptions and forcing everyone through matchmaking in order to serve up cannon fodder for more experienced players.

If I were Sony, I would worry just as much about the people who bow out of playing games altogether, or just retreat into retro games especially with all the new Android handhelds targeting them.

The problem with the physical media for today's consoles is that it is the game in name only. The version on the disc is quickly outdated by launch day patches, follow-up patches, add-on content, etc.

I do think there is a market for a return to an XBox 360 model where the tech behind the games is artificially constrained to allow for games to be published solely on DVDs again. No installation required, no patches required, smaller budgets, quicker release time lines. But Microsoft is not the company to pursue that approach

The client in your family members devices has encryption keys that you do not have in your client or on the server

My only disappointment with this release is that the beta version of workflows does not have the ability to sort photos into albums by face detected (yet). That’s what I’ve been waiting for as both Google Photos and Ente support smart albums

The latter, it works quite well

This is not end to end encryption. There is nothing stopping you (or Hetzner) from accessing your family’s data, as one the disks are mounted to a host they are decrypted and available for use.

True E2EE would be that all data on those disks is encrypted by the client your family uses, so even if you combed through the disk volume you would only see cipher text

You can use something like Immich Public Proxy to only expose the /share path of your server and keep the main /api path that has everything else behind VPN

Yeah Immich and Ente are going for two different use cases. While Ente can be self hosted, I view it as more of an escape hatch if they ever enshittify vs how I would start off using the service. I like not having to manage ingress for a photos service so my family can use it but others cannot

Valve has an incentive to keep being benevolent because consumers have the option of using other stores on the same hardware.

If you have invested into Sony platforms and games, you're stuck. You either write it off and move now, buying hardware during a component crisis, or you keep investing moving forward. On a PC, I might lose access to games on Steam but my hardware will allow me to buy new games on a different storefront.

From a business perspective, I understand this. The physical games sections of most retailers are pitiful these days - take a walk down the PS5 aisle in Target or Best Buy for example. They also have a need to shore up margins if they want to keep subsidizing the hardware during the component crisis. And their biggest competitor, XBox, is in the process of pivoting out of their current pivot and apparently is about to layoff a massive chunk of its workforce.

But at the end of the day, part of what makes a console a console to me is the ability to swap games with friends. If I can't do that easily, why wouldn't I just use Steam?

The Macbook Pro jump is probably the most meaningful, as it now puts the 16GB/1TB configuration of the 14" at $1999. That is now more than a Framework 13 Pro with Intel Core Ultra 3, 16 GB/1TB, whereas the Framework looked more expensive when it was originally announced.

The 2013 Steam Machine is as different from this device as it could possibly be. Proton didn't exist back then and Steam Input was still in (relative) infancy.

There is a distinct difference between a chair and a communication (birthday card, letter, email, whatever) about some personal life event

If you keep your media accessible through Plex or Jellyfin, I recommend checking Chromatix[1] out - simple and no frills

I just checked my email and saw that my earliest use of Dropbox was with its 3rd alpha for Linux in August 2008. That is an awfully long time to be using a service. I remember how exciting it was when they released an Android client for my HTC Incredible to run

This is key. As a kid I still wanted to play sports outside because the sports video games were pretty limited

Our team at work uses all three major public clouds and our Google Account Team is by far the worst of the three. Nothing like having to explain the same problem I’m having from the start again on every monthly cadence call because they don’t note anything or try to help resolve it
