A little wishy-washy for my taste but some good points in there I guess.
Back during the great depression polls showed 25-35% of Americans would opt for Communism. It never happened and the support for Communism collapsed by the fifties.
Seems the grass is always greener across the street. These same Americans when asked can't even name the three branches of American government.

I'm not sure your "same Americans" assertion stands to reason. After all, the same Americans use "that's socialism" or "that's communism" very incorrectly when objecting to just about any policy. Republican politicians regularly call their opponents "Radical Leftists" for no reason at all.
Perhaps the current Americans who favor socialism know what "socialism" means other than an insult, and the current Americans who can't name the 3 branches are the portion that uses "socialism" as a synonym for "I don't like this". Needs more research.
