I hope this is poorly phrased or I am misunderstanding it, because it feels like it's implying that Matrix's terrible scaling issues will have their fixes paywalled. Even non-federated homeservers chew up RAM and CPU like candy when you get too many users.

It's ridiculous to blame a decades long ethnic conflict that already had established routes of propaganda through the state on Facebook. You can also see no noticeable increase in violence correlating with internet access.
My highschool, like most of the time, was full of kids who sent Iraqi beheadings and shock sites to each other. Voluntarily viewing something disgusting isn't a traumatic experience. Nor is being tricked into it when you can just press a big red X and never have to think about it again.
