To be such a place, people would have to feel like their effort was appreciated. Opinion that is not in line with the majority is appreciated by some on hacker news. The problem is approving voices are few, and the rest are very happy to use their flag, for many reasons. Humor seems to be one of the triggers that sets a vocal minority off.

Modern media is frankly vindictive and malicious. Facts be dambed and apologies are out of the question. I think if you looked at this in an unbiased way you'd see the difference. Many of these people are being driven to push these issues out of a true sense of right and wrong. You just don't like it when people you hate don't let these injustices pass.
I've never met a person who didn't believe vaccines work, yet i've always heard anti-vax people be characterized that way.
In reality, many good parents just understand that vaccinations for non-life threatening diseases like chickenpox, measels and diptheria are simply unnecessary.
People in first world countries just don't die of these diseases any more. Meanwhile the shear number of shots they want to give children now is rediculous and can't be safe for all children, that's not just logic, it's science too.

people are often biased and unempathetic. you need to follow your gut. when lots of people are saying something illogical then you need to keep looking for more people before you decide on a course of action. this is an important life skill.

I am against most vaccines while i know they are safe an effective. its just that they are oversold and frequently unnecessary.
i am not against GMOs, but i want them labeled for safety reasons. i can't know if GMO corn is ok if i don't know it was crossed with peanuts can i?

as far as climate change, that's the one that takes the cake. no one cares about they evidence, they look first at what side is going to make the future better in their eyes and then they choose. science be damned.

there are some people that are wrong on some things. some of them advocate people eat 'paleo', whatever that is. therefore, you should not eat 'paleo'
bonus: a study found that you can lose more weight on a low fat diet than a low carb diet. of course, part of the weight loss in the low fat group was from people chewing off their own limbs, but still, you should do a low fat diet because its more effective, even if you can't think straight while you're on it.

yeah, the reason most people do low carb is because low-fat leads to horrible discomfort. Low carb's popularity is from the fact that the long term will power drain is very low.

i tried q. i answered a couple questions. people then tried to discredit my answers, but i'm pretty experienced in my field so i dropped longer explanations, more logic, refereces. ok, everythings calmed down now.
then it happened again. i don't have time for that. people were serious about putting down good answers, i assume for selfish reasons. i deleted all my stuff and haven't been back since.
i think it works when celebrities use it, and fans can feel closer to the people they look up to. but its just a totally diffent crowd than say stack overflow and i didn't realize that when i joined.

I really like Linode. We've got two instances and they are very reliable. I switched one over to KVM last night and everything went off quickly and without a hitch.
I'm a bit confused about some of the comments here. I like linode because they deal in VPSs with the things I need to run real databases: Fast SSD and good RAM amounts. Things may be different now but two years ago when I compared to Amazon, Linode had a much better price and selection on that. And I'm just not motivated to look at AWS now, since in that time I've been very happy with the reliability.
