Why is that a perverse incentive? If the baseline is that it’s illegal to sell such things to kids, then this seems like a roundabout way to hire kids as a forcing mechanism to make companies really careful not to do this.

Yep! This is where the western / action movie trope of racing to cross the train tracks comes from. If you can get the train between yourself and your pursuer, it’s going to be a long time before they can do anything to catch up again. Often times in these movies, whoever is fleeing will take a few casual moments to look back at their blocked pursuer because there’s so much time to spare.

Do we know that? That seems astounding to me. This is a difficult industry with high risk where they’re primarily just competing with their own free apps for what will probably be cannibalizing user time.

Is it confirmed that Apple will forbid in app purchases? Because otherwise I wouldn’t see any reason to expect this.

The card is probably a good idea. No fee, simplicity, and convenience are good for the consumer. Only selling to Apple product users means a certain band of wealth and thereby lower default rates are implicitly targeted. It’s a good deal for both, especially for consumers who wouldn’t normally spend enough to earn something noteworthy or even positive against the card fee on better cards. News is also a pretty good deal if you like news... but yes, both are really boring. It seems like something interesting to apple investors, but not consumers.

The games platform sounds both boring AND unlikely to do well

You might notice that the prices of trading A for B, then B for C, then C for A results in more A than you began with if done instantaneously.

But you can’t do that for a trillion dollars, because the “price” of an asset is just the best offer to buy or sell, and those are capped at the quantity of the best offer. Once you exhaust those, the arbitrage might not exist anymore because the remaining best offers will be worse. Say the market has capacity to actively exploit arbitrage for $10,000. You will earn the same amount of dollars if you have $1,000,000 or $10,000 if you exploit it to the max, but your return will be 100x better if your base is $10,000.

for what it is, this seems like a good change. Not a big change, but it should reduce the idiocy of letting people learn valuable things and then not letting them stay to use it.

To anyone curious how Shazam works, it looks for similarity in the spectrogram of the music. This is not too different from how we identify certain chemical compounds with mass spectrometry.
