> I am not convinced. "You can no longer hold office" is a permanent punishment. Why should that not be allowed?

Let's say that some new evidence comes out that exonerates the person. You can indeed reverse the "no longer hold office" punishment. You can't bring someone back from the dead.

Who are you referring to? For clarification it was Rittenhouse who cleaned graffiti, not any of the victims, which seems to support the grandparents argument.

One can also let themselves be misled by the media for political reasons.

If you actually watched the trial and reviewed the publicly available evidence, and still think the jury made the wrong decision, then I agree, you have a right to that opinion.

However, if you only believed he is guilty because your favorite media figures told you this, then I would say you don't actually believe that a person is innocent until proven guilty.

> He traveled across state lines

Why would you think this is even relevant? He lived close to the border, and stayed within the same metro area.

> attend a protest with a gun he didn't personally own

This was not illegal.

> If that was self defense, so was this case

So were the judge and jury just corrupt? Did you watch the videos of him being threatened and attacked, including by someone (Grosskreutz), who also had a gun?

I guess you don't believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty?

Technical jargon like "gigantic" or "enormous"?

It seems like it would be simple to just create a fork and archive the old repo. Add a note to the old repo, update a couple of the most important docs and links, and then worry about the rest later. It can be low hanging fruit for new contributors.

I think what he meant was that you can take a group of people and train them for a sport. Some of those people (genetically elite athletes) will improve very quickly with minimal training, others can do massive amounts of training and never reach beyond a certain level.

I think you are arguing against a strawman. I've never heard someone suggest that the machine operator shouldn't be paid. Same for the other example who would clearly be doing labor.

Yes, we can clearly say that capital gains is unearned. Unearned income can also be taxable.

> no, we can't say at all that capital gains are unearned.

Yes, we can say this. The IRS classifies capital gains as unearned income.

The parent post is not talking about managers, they receive a salary and are taxed at regular income rates. It's taking about shareholders. Someone who makes money by owning a stock should be taxed more aggressively that someone earning a salary, IMO.

Lack of healthcare, limited job opportunities, growing income inequality, are just a few reasons off the top of my head.

In general I agree with you, but it also makes me wonder how these people got to this point. I think most people would burn the Mona Lisa if it meant surviving through a cold night. Our society has failed these people in many ways.

Yes, that was kind of my point. Either tobacco is uniquely bad or it can be grouped "along with other drugs". It can't be both.

How can it be "uniquely bad" if it's "along with other drugs"?

I don't think this is true, do you have a source for this? What does it even mean that he constantly marketed himself, is doing lots of shows considered "marketing yourself"?

> their Ukraine coverage is basically Russia-lite, and extremely anti-Ukrainian

This is very surprising to me, I thought they were kind of pro Ukraine biased.

I asked an AI and it came back with this:

> The New York Times' coverage of the war is overwhelmingly pro-Ukraine in its framing, tone, and attribution of responsibility, though critics argue this manifests as omission of context regarding NATO expansion and US intelligence involvement rather than direct support for Russia.
