I feel your pain. I'm working with a physics PhD who's now doing software development and he's the same. Sloppy desk, sloppy code, sloppy abstractions. He also has the habit of talking over me and is not at all interested in my input, always plowing on in the wrong direction.
Unfortunately, I work in an academic setting and that seems to give someone with a qualification in an unrelated subject more authority. I feel a little powerless to influence the way we do things.
I've made peace with the fact that this guy is never going to change, but will eventually move on to something else.
Hi! I'm a full-stack software developer from Cape Town with 10+ years of experience -- mostly web, a bit of devops and, more recently, network programming in combination with industrial control systems integration. Remote opportunities preferred but not a requirement.

Hi! I'm a "full-stack" engineer with 10+ years experience -- mostly web, a bit of devops and, more recently, scientific instrument control at my current org. Lots of experience with the non-programming aspects of software too.
I was asked to complete a screening test on CoderPad earlier this year and got rejected because, from what I could tell, my edits didn't sync with their backend for some reason. Of course I couldn't prove it so I can't blame the company. It sucks because I came up with what I thought was a pretty good solution to the problem. Make a copy and attach it in a notification email to your interviewer!
Anyway, just one more reason to be weary of these types of tools.
