A few of your points do not work out precisely because of China's "harmonious' culture. It's more difficult to be accepted as a foreigner _even if you are of Chinese descent_.
But I agree there are a large many things that can be learned.
Imagine even more sophisticated advertising from Big Pharma to the old and vulnerable. That is reason enough.
As a society we are getting better at talking about income. We hide _that_ because of a lack of class consciousness. We should absolutely be transparent with income (except when negotiating for a new salary).
Like you say it's the access to data itself that is valuable. At risk of oversimplifying: building models is the easy part. Plenty of smart people who can do that.
Data that is expensive to acquire is the best long-term play for an ML company. Either expensive due to regulations or expensive due to the quality of sources. Ideally both.
As seen with the #MeToo movement among others -- there have been people, there are people, and there will be people whose voices are silenced. Not always explicitly.
Well put argument. A lot of posturing in comments in threads like these which try to mislead the reader into thinking that they are looking at the conflict from a higher, more rational, position.
We should cease pretending scale does not matter. Also that analogies are useful. Your flyer analogy is not useful because it does not _replace_ another flyer. A clear analogy would be buying advertising space in a newspaper.
If you were to buy the entire newspaper's advertising space to amplify your voice I would definitely consider it an abuse of power and wrong.
